Only 3% of Liberals Oppose Passing the Current HCR Bill
http://theplumline.whorunsgov.com/health-care/poll-liberals-entirely-united-behind-passing-health-bill/

One of the more interesting health care subplots, as I’ve noted here, is the surprisingly high degree of consensus emerging on the left that passing the flawed Senate bill with a fix is best way forward — something which, earlier in the debate, seemed anything but assured.

The latest from Public Policy Polling illustrates this as dramatically as you could want:

Dennis Kucinich’s flip on the health care vote this morning is symbolic of a broader shift among liberals. Last month 73% said they supported the plan with 19% opposed. Now 89% say they support the plan with only 3% opposed. Whether it’s because of the President’s increasing visibility on the issue or because liberals finally decided the current bill is as good as they’re going to get and better than nothing, there’s been a big rise in support since early February.

The shift has come completely with Democratic voters. A month ago 39% of independents said they supported it, now 40% do. A month ago 10% of Republicans said the supported it, and that’s now actually down to 8%. But Democratic support has risen from 63% to 76% in the last month. Obama seems to have succeeded in better unifying the party around his goals.

Only three percent of liberals oppose passing the plan — down 16 points. That illustrates pretty clearly that those arguing that the bill shouldn’t be passed because it’s irrevocably flawed have lost the argument.

Also: It suggests that House Dems might be able to count on the base turning out in the midterms if they succeed in getting this thing done — another argument, perhaps, for passing it.

5. You can't please evrerybody and I'm distinctly displeased by this bill
but I'm still in favor of passing it. Yes, it's a bad bill. Yes, we need to pressure those old boys to start lowering the Medicare age, at least for at cost buy ins for people who have been thrown out of corporate jobs because they're not cost effective at the age of 50+.

Passing a mandate with no alternative to feeding insurance company greed is unconscionable.

However, it's better than nothing. I know, I've lived with nothing for far too long.

7. "— down 16 points." This just points to people resigning themselves to the flaws of the system...
...and playing an end game.

Either that or it is a defective poll comparing itself to a more valid one.

Edited on Wed Mar-17-10 07:44 PM by Marr
You didn't have a car because you had no money. Now you've got that car you were mandated to buy, and even got a nice little subsidy to hand over to AMC. But if you want to drive it, you have to put gas in it. No money? Oh well. AMC would like to thank the government for the subsidy. Now put on your walking shoes.

33. The beauty of passing this now is precisely to mitigate any "shock" in November.
When the voters see that this is not the end of the world as the GOP and a tiny minority of malcontents in our party make it out to be, I think the Democrats won't do all that bad.

Will we lose seats? Sure - the party in power nearly always lose seats in an off-year election. Will it be a wipe out? I don't think so.

It's just like with DK before he said yes, you guys are running around telling us we're in the extreme minority. So? Doesn't that mean we're irrelevent? Then why do you still obsess about it-- Why browbeat people? Why pick these fights?

Is it really that you just can't accept that some people disagree with this bill? What are you doing with this thread, and so many others, what do you want?

At least I'm not. Can only hope now that we're wrong in our estimations, based on careful analysis of the provisions, that the health care situation in America is going to get exponentially worse - not better - over the next ten years.

I sincerely hope not. To many American families need me to have to say "it turns out I was wrong" - something I'd be thrilled beyond measure to do...
