Gore Group Makes a Political Hire
Al Gore's new environmental advocacy group has hired a Democratic political operative with experience in the last two presidential cycles, a Gore spokeswoman, Kalee Kreider, confirmed.
The Alliance for Climate Protection, which Gore chairs, hired Brian Hardwick away from Penn, Schoen & Berland Associates, the company co-founded by Clinton pollster Mark Penn. Hardwick was a vice president in the New York office.
Previously, Hardwick was deputy campaign manager for Joe Lieberman in 2004. In 2000, when Gore ran for president, he worked in the fundraising operation.
Gore has responded dismissively to suggestions that he could be a late entrant into the 2008 Democratic presidential primary, but he has not ruled out the option. And he retains the political infrastructure to make a decision to run.
His circle still includes a group of political operatives with national campaign experience who haven't committed to other campaigns, including his former chief of staff, Roy Neel, consultant Mike Feldman and now Hardwick.
The Alliance for Climate Protection, based in Palo Alto, Calif., is launching a three-year "mass persuasion" campaign on the issue of global warming, in which Hardwick will play a role, Kreider said. The group, a nonprofit 501(c)3 with a bipartisan board of directors, is financed in part with proceeds from Gore's movie, An Inconvenient Truth, and from the coming Live Earth concert series. Kreider noted that it's routine for political staffers to move over to nonprofit advocacy organizations.
