He went on and on about how public schools are just training kids to be come "socialist" and other things. When asked to explain, he couldn't do anything more than come up with Rush or Hannity talking points that are probably passed out at his church's Men's meetings.

I let him rant and then said Thank you for telling me how you feel about me. The kid said "oh I didn't mean you"

I just dropped the conversation.

James W. Loewen goes into wonderful detail about how our various politically motivated distortions of History make it impossible for students to see the real interrelated motivations that powered historical events. It shows how the whitewashing of historical events also makes history harder to learn. If a student can see the motivations behind events as they truly happened then it is easy to understand. If we lie about the causes of events then history becomes all memorization of dates and is harder to learn than a foreign language when you aren't allowed to speak to anyone who knows the language.

Loewen shows how the manipulation of the facts and back story of history powers the fundy brainwashed people and their mistaken view of the world. He also shows that a lot of these problems were created by the Daughters of the Confederacy directly trying to change the real historical facts of the civil war and all the events afterward.

I really do think this is one of the most important books of the last 15 years.

I finally asked her, "so, you think I shouldn't be paid a living wage?" Sputter, back pedal, etc. She knows what I do -- the amount of work, the frustrations, and the bullcrap that come with the territory. That's the way it is with the Kool-Aid drinkers, just like with the tea bagger, no taxes libertarians. No government programs! (but please keep your hands off my medicare!). They want the services but don't want to pay for them.
