Council passes bans on tents and shopping carts in parks

Bans on shopping carts and camping-style tents in public parks without a permit were passed by the City Council today.

The bills were passed by votes of 7-2. They now go to Mayor Mufi Hannemann for consideration.

Hannemann's administration introduced the bills that would make it tougher for homeless people to linger in public parks.

Supporters argued the bans are needed to make sure public parks are open and accessible to everyone.

Bill 10-7 would prohibit camping-style tents in public parks unless the user received a city permit. It would not apply to temporary canopies. Bill 10-8 would ban anyone from taking a shopping cart into public parks at any time.
