I Don't Want President Obama To Fail And The Republicants To Cripple His Presidency
They never accepted him as president. They never accepted Bill Clinton either and did whatever they could to undermine him.

That is all...

Please carry on...

3. The Democants are eager participants.
President Obama deliberately aimed low, ignoring single-payer, but even a public option is beyond the reach of the Owned Congress.

I don't think the Legislative Branch could succeed at tee-ball.

It doesn't even have one Republicant vote. Even five House Democrats voted for Clinto's impeachment.

This Demorat will not assist in the bringing down of a Democratic president.

not a clone of Scalia. And I'm sure Palin would have issued an executive order extending certain benefits to same sex couples. And I'm positive that groups like the NRDC would be issuing glowing press statements about the renewed commitment to environmental issues demonstrated by President Palin.

Do you disagree that we aren't at a critical crossroad as far as the legitimacy of this administration is concerned?

The republicans have managed to play and sway many people with their disingenuous claims : Death Panel's- socialism- etc.
They place all the blame for the state of our economy on Pres. Obama, bitch about burdening our children, claim the govt. is trying to dictate personal choice, etc... using the anger, fear, and desperation that this economic mess is causing to regain/retain their power and control.

I respect your opinion. I'm interested in why you made the reply you did.

Could you explain?

The whole "bipartisanship" mantra wasn't a joke. It was a calculated pitch. People don't get to the Oval Office by winging it.

Obama and the self-described "Centrists" he surrounds himself with promoted bipartisanship for a reason. They had no intention of working on a liberal agenda, and needed cover for pushing an right-of-center agenda that would be unpopular with much of their party and out of step with the party's platform. They had to frame their work as the result of "compromise".

You can't just blow that off with, "we are where we are, oh well, couldn't see that coming, now come out and cheer".

23. President Obama Wasn't My Candidate In The Primaries
Whether his emphasis on bipartisanship during the campaign was genuine or a gimmick I knew it would never work. But we are where we are. The Republicants want to defeat the health care reform bill because President Obama has invested so much time and prestige in its passing and a loss will be deeply embarrassing.

32. I believe it is more than "embarrassment" that we need to be
concerned about.

I also believe that we desperately have to find a way to bring our country together, to find common ground as Pres. O campaigned on and has tried so hard to do in his time so far. I honestly don't believe that we can survive as a nation if we don't address the intense hatred-(I use that word seriously) that has been nurtured politically over the last 20+ yrs. or so. When Bill Clinton defeated GHW Bush a different kind of ugly, anything goes mentality developed and it's been nurtured and fed by the media ever since.

If we don't find a way to work with each other towards a common goal- our country WILL fail. A Democratic "win" is more than just having 'our' people in power imo- it is demonstrating the positive reality of governing and living together- in a country where everyone matters. That's what being a liberal Democrat means to me anyway.

36. The only common ground is People. To bring us together, government must act in our interests, or
the tyranny must become too obvious to ignore. We are closer to the latter than the former.

When was the last bill passed that improved the lot of the American citizen beyond 1980 standards? Most of living America isn't old enough to remember an improvement brought by Congress to their safety or security, or share of the bounty of America.

America has the best platitudes in the World, but platitudes and bombs are no replacement for government in the peoples interest. And we've been renewing the contracts of liars for too long.

30. IMHO he's crippling his own presidency
by being too cautious and conservative. What America wanted in 2008 was change. Progressive change. If Pres. Obama can bring them that, his presidency will turn out very good. America is a very liberal country at its heart. That's why FDR won so many times. The repubs have just tricked Americans with propaganda into thinking they are far-right. If Obama governed as a progressive, I think a "silent majority" would awaken and re-elect dems constantly. But the dems are too obsessed with fundraising (from corporate sources) to do that.

and I worked very hard for his campaign, so you are really speaking out of turn here.

Obama said himself about HCR: "I have rejected a whole bunch of provisions that the left wanted that are — you know, they were very adamant about because I thought it would be too disruptive to the system." What is "the system" to you? it's the status quo which serves them and harms us. Wasn't CHANGING the system the foundation of Obama's ENTIRE campaign?

59. Well, that's not my recollection
Starting with Inauguration day....
you were already disatisfied, as you always knew he wasn't gonna live up to your agenda,
because you knew he wasn't a flaming Liberal.....not even that close.

So the continueous railing that he Betrayed his "base", when most that say that here
actually knew they weren't his "base" is quite desingeneous.

You were happy that he beat McCain, but after that, you expected him to prove to you
that he was an ideologue, when you already knew that he wasn't.

In otherwords, you're pissed because you can afford to be pissed........
but in reality, you never expected anything different than what has played out to date....
but still you stomp your feet and act like he's disappointed you. But in reality, he hasn't.....
because he's been nothing but quite consistent in his practicality based on the fact that
the U.S. simply isn't and will never be sweden, and this President is fully aware of this,
even if you pretend not to be aware, although each and everyday shit happens beyond
this President that makes you know that.

73. Agreed. I was thrilled by his election
but I've gotten a very cold feeling in the pit of my stomach as his choices have been made. They'll be no real change for unemployed formally middle class women like me with massive medical debt to contend with. The Warren choice was a slap in the face to all women, and there's absolutely no hope of reforming the health care system if insurance companies are still part of the equation. And as for being an environmentalist? Yes, he'll not be as destructive as Bush by any means (thank goodness) but "clean coal" is a fossil fuel industry lie. I sincerely hope that he does bring about a green revolution, but it's a hope, not an expectation.

I know that the OP will be raked over the coals for bucking the trend here and refusing to weep for joy or even have a multiple orgasm over the inauguration (hell, one DUer said that it would be the most joyous moment of her life-right up there with having her children)but she's being honest, and I know that that pisses a lot of people off. ....

Sometimes we need to stand together just a little- and then continue to fight to make our policies the way we know they need to be.

64. If "we" were fighting to make our policies the "way they need to be"
We would be fighting for single payer, and so would our President. Instead he's given us the Gingrich plan (which he admitted). Fighting for repug policies is NOT part of my agenda. I'll stand with the people, not the status quo.

52. If he fails it will be because he failed us
He will not be able to appease the Right by surrendering the Left. That only moves the Center toward the Right, since the Left gets little or no voice. Only the Left has the passion to take on the Right head on, and the left is being disarmed. Obama is exposing himself to continued attacks without benefit of his potentially strongest defenders.

60. if he fails, we all fail.
don't fool yourself into thinking the republicans aren't doing everything they can to destroy us- and they are being helped along by members of our own party.

If 'the left' as you call it, has any hope whatsoever of obtaining power, there is NO way Pres.Obama could silence or diminish their voice. The 'left' will fall right along with everyone else.

How can you not understand this?

66. How can you not understand that Blue dogs, DLCers and "New Democrats"
are PART of the corporate conservative movement? Their sole purpose is to destroy Liberalism, and they are succeeding with your help. Don't fear for Obama; he's a big boy and he'll always take care of himself. It's the rest of America you should be concerned about.

69. how can you not understand that working against this bill is working
FOR those entities which will keep any hope of legislative change in the way our country deals with healthcare out of the reach of Democrats for years and years?

If you really think that there is any chance we could go from no healthcare bill to government sponsored healthcare for all, you aren't living in the same world I have been living in for the last 50+ years.

I AM concerned about 'the rest of America'. I'm living in it. I share your frustration with those in this party who are marginally attached to what I believe are key Democratic principals- There is little we can do about them other than work to replace them with people more in line with what we believe in. But we aren't going to get there if those who have far left beliefs (which includes ME) are so intent on our issues that we work in concert with the republicans to defeat our own party.

It isn't Pres.Obama I'm concerned about (although I do believe there is a very dangerous hatred being kindled for him). If this administration fails- don't kid yourself, our party will suffer, and so will everyone in this country.

There is a time for standing together even if it's not easy, DK knows this and is trying to make sure everyone else knows it too.

peace~

71. Exactly.
Someone's personal political ambitions matter not to me one bit. What matters is how he governs. How he honors his word. Does he keep or break his promises?

Obama certainly failed this hero:

63. It is not Obama who fails, but all American people who are still
lazy and ignorant.

People deserve their President.

Obama could be good if people can stand up for themselves and act.

67. We deserved the President that we voted into office
we don't deserve the one who resides there now. He no longer stands with us; he stands with Banksters, Insurance companies, for profit hospital and Big Pharma. I truly wish that he would govern 'as advertised", but it appears that that will never be the case. Protecting the status quo is not "Change we can believe in".

68. He never did stand with us
The New Democrat was hiding behind the facade of the campaigning candidate all along.

76. He doesn't need the Republicans to cripple his presidency.
He's doing nicely all on his own.

Which I sincerely regret.

79. By signing a bill with a mandate to purchase insurance from
known crooks under penalty of law Obama is sealing his own fate. He could have fought for the little guy. Instead he's sided with the corporations. The R's aren't crippling his Presidency. He's doing it to himself.
