Lawyer says church had 'a duty' to catch woman
Jurors begin to hear case of 'slain in the Spirit' fall

Kevin Grasha
Lansing State Journal

CHARLOTTE - A church member ostracized, a threat of 24-hour surveillance and accusations of slander highlighted opening arguments Monday in the case of a woman suing her former pastor and church.

Judith Dadd says she was injured nearly five years ago during a service at Mount Hope Church in Delta Township after being "slain in the Spirit" - where church members sway or collapse to the floor while praying.

Dadd, who is seeking unspecified damages in excess of $25,000, claims she went to the altar during the July 18, 2002, service and was overcome by the "Spirit of the Lord." Trained ushers at the 4,000-member church should have been there to catch her, as they had in the past, said one of her attorneys, Richard Rashid, during opening arguments.

"There was a duty to catch her when she fell," Rashid said.

I'm telling you, if I were God, the only reason I would keep humans around would be comic relief.

1. That is freaking HILARIOUS.
But honestly, it's like someone in a "serpent handling" church suing the congregation for snakebite. So she fell on the floor. She should have just gone back for some faith healing!

3. LOL, too funny...
I've only had one experience with a Catholic so-called faith healer. It was about 25 years ago and it took every ounce of self-control not to laugh out loud during her "performance".

5. We once actually talked to Pat Robertson on the phone.
He used to do one of those "Call up and claim your healing" segments. We would get really stoned, and wait for Pat to put his hand to his head and start going "I see...I see...a man cured of CANCER! If that's you, CALL NOW and CLAIM YOUR HEALING!!"

Then one of us would call and claim the most outrageous shit, like "PRAISE GOD! A GREAT BIG CANCER TUMOR JUST FELL OFF MY LEG!"

They put every one on the air, and we laughed til we cried.

9. I had a friend
Who would call the Sunday morning church shows in Tulsa where the ministers would sit in their armchairs in front of an audience and tell people on the phone what they needed to do to get right with the lord. She called once claiming to be pregnant and thinking of getting an abortion. She of course leap-frogged over everyone in the phone queue and got on live with the pastors. My friend is very smart and a skilled conversationalist so she kept leading the pastors to a certain question, and after telling her not to get an abortion and just find a man who would take care of her while she talked about what a scum her baby-daddy was, they finally asked, "Where did you meet this guy anyway?"

She answered, "Oh, it was at your church last year."

The phone call ended as quickly as decorum would allow as the pastors wanted her off the line but didn't want to look like they were trying to get her off the line as quickly as possible. She laughed about that for days.

12. Yeah but it doesn't cover 'Act of God' events
Then again, God getting insurance and then committing an act to get paid would be insurance fraud wouldn't it?
