Westboro Baptist was a no-show in Louisiana....
http://www.2theadvocate.com/news/88517072.html

They were supposed to be here yesterday afternoon to picket a local high school for putting on "The Laramie Project." But they never showed up. I wonder if that's a common M.O. of theirs- Announce that they're going to be somewhere, with no intentions of ever actually making the trip?

3. They do that a lot. They issue press releases saying they will be place and then don't show.
They think it makes them appear larger than they are and that it "intimidates" people.

I also think they suppose that it makes them "appear formless like water" with nobody sure where they will or will not attack.

But what it really does is generate outrage AGAINST Westboro Baptist with counter-protesters galvanizing the community.

4. It may be they think that counter protesters are as small a group as
themselves, and that they can exhaust the resources of the counter protesters by making them respond where there is actually no threat - not bad guerrilla tactics, if it were true. The reality, of course, is that anywhere they go there are local counter protesters in far greater numbers than their own, so there don't have to be organized counter protesters chasing them around the country.

IOW, they're just plain stupid.

5. In addition to generating outrage against Westboro,
it brings out more supporters of the people Westboro is against.

More veterans might show up to support a family when Westboro is going to protest. More gays and their allies might show up if they think the homophobic fools will be out in force.

We had a friend who was a captain of the motorcycle group who rides to show support at veteran's funeral's. (He was a lawyer, too, and a former president of the state bar association). He died. Westboro was delighted. They threatened to show up in force. They didn't show up in large numbers, but veterans and motorcycle riders certainly turned out in large numbers.

Let's continue to make them look small. Because they are.
