A retired U.S. general's claim that gay Dutch soldiers were partly to blame for allowing Europe's worst massacre since World War II has sparked outrage in the Netherlands.

Retired Gen. John Sheehan on Thursday told a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing in Washington, D.C., that gay soldiers weakened the Dutch army, which failed to prevent Serb forces massacring some 8,000 Muslim men in the Bosnian enclave of Srebrenica in July 1995.

Dutch government officials reacted angrily on Friday to claims by a retired U.S. general that Dutch forces were overrun in Srebrenica in 1995 in part because of the presence of gay soldiers.

At a U.S. congressional hearing on Thursday on allowing gay soldiers to serve openly in the military, former Supreme Allied Commander John Sheehan said there was a link between having homosexuals in the Dutch forces and the massacre at Srebrenica.

1. When I watched that idiot General make those comments I was actually glad
that he articulated such nonsense. If you bring these sort of secret notions out and put them on the table then they can be blown apart. My first thought was that he is a plant designed to show the absurdity of status quo thinking.

Then I realized that the general actually believed what he was saying. Next thought - this is going to be fun as the Dutch come after him and his current and former military associates have to disassociate themselves from him and such a moronic theory.

2. I also suspect that as more people live longer lives,
we're going to see other things like this. Partly because they can't cope with the pressure of the changes taking place in the world, and maybe partly because of dementia. Gen. John Sheehan is 70.

James Watson, a co-discoverer of DNA, made some outrageous remarks about race a couple of years ago, at 82, and it led to an apology and his resignation. He appeared surprised that he had ever said such a thing.

Canada has a former cabinet minister running around claiming that aliens are trying to contact us because they have the solution to our oil crisis. He is 87.

Of course the question arises...did they always think like this and are now unable to avoid blurting it out, or is it purely the result of a deteriorating mind?

The Dutch told him to shut up apparently.

7. Ooooh I hope van Bremen speaks out then.
I don't know if Sheehan realizes it, but all his NATO allies have gay soldiers, and the Americans have served alongside them for years.
