Stupak willing to Agree to Hyde Amendent! (THIS WILL SEAL THE DEAL PEOPLE)
Edited on Fri Mar-19-10 12:23 PM by berni_mccoy
Stupak has come forward saying he would vote yes (and bring the remainder of his bloc) on HCR if they could get a separate vote on the Hyde Amendment later this year. Currently, the Hyde Amendment is not a permanent law, but a tag on the HHS appropriations bill. Stupak wants a vote on a separate law that is the same as the current Hyde Amendment and is not attached to the HHS appropriations. He's not asking for support of that bill either, just a vote on it.

HCR is about to become law. History is about to be made.

44. And once Stupka loses his primary, the vote will never have to be taken.
So, fuck you, Brad Stupak!

2. The deal was already sealed, IMO fuck Stupak
A vote on the Hyde Amendment is going to do nothing but bring a divisive issue into the news cycle and force Democrats to take a tough vote before an election.

The Dems set the schedule.

37. It might be embarrassing but seeing that it is settled law at this point
it is meaningless. The Supreme Court settled it in Harris v. MacRae (1980). Of course we liberals don't like it but that is irrelevant as far as members of Congress are concerned. Whether they think it's a good thing or a bad thing is of no consequence and will be rightly pointed out by Dems if push comes to shove.

3. Does this mean Stupak caved?
This smells like a face-saver deal so he doesn't get totally humiliated when his vaunted 12 abandon him.

Hope so...

4. Mostly yes.
But I would not want to see the Hyde Amendment become permanent law either, even though it essentially is being continuously tacked onto the HHS appropriations bill each year.

39. As long as we have the Supreme Court decision on Hyde, it really
doesn't matter. Unless another challenge unrelated to the Harris decision can be mounted successfully against it in the SCOTUS, I don't see the permanent status issue a big deal. Yucky, yes, but it changes nothing...

17. That's What's Been Happening...
He's been getting hammered on the cables for his remarks about "I don't listen to nuns". And then he cites Fecal on the Family as an "advisor"? He was complaining about all the pressure on him prior to this faux pas. He's looking for an out and found it. Methinks his phone calls got very nasty the last 24 hours.

Cheers...

:hi:

9. Stupak willing to agree to what he's been trying to do all along?
How about that.

The Stupak-Pitts amendment only enshrined the Hyde Amendment into law anyway. So he's willing to settle for everything he wants?

The Hyde Amendment has been added to the appropriations bill for almost four decades now. Leaving it off would be a titanic struggle as it is, and he knows this.

The Catholic bishops should be told to leave off abortion until we know that they will keep their fucking hands off the kids once they're born.

10. This was what it was about all along
Not that the Senate language allowed "taxpayerfundedabortionsohmy", but that it left the Hyde amendment as an annual measure rather than making it permanent. There was always a chance that it could be "left out" of the appropriations bill in some future year.

43. He insisted that the Senate does not preserve Hyde. He wants Hyde to be enforced
in the language of the bill. He countered the original report that said he'd allow a vote later in the year. He wants the vote now, before HCR is passed. And it sounds like the bill he wants passed is something different than a permanent Hyde Amendment.

Deal isn't done yet.
