Reader Robert V. Hunt Jr. repeats the canard that "If Bill Clinton could be impeached for irrelevant personal behavior, then Bush and Cheney can be impeached & ." Clinton was not impeached for adultery; he was impeached for perjury committed during judicial proceedings, which is a felony. Just ask Scooter Libby. Besides being impeached, but not convicted, Clinton was disbarred from practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, heavily fined in U.S. District Court, and suspended from practice by the Arkansas Supreme Court. A felony is a high crime, as in "high crimes and misdemeanors."

Reader Clay Berger repeats the canard that President Clinton was impeached for committing perjury to a grand jury. While it is true that this is a felony, The President did not commit perjury. Clinton's testimony was legally accurate. He may have evaded the obvious answers, but the same people who condemn Clinton for outwitting the partisan prosecutors, give Alberto Gonzales a pass for conveniently forgetting everything he did in the Justice Dept over the last few years. Despite what the witch hunters in the GOP say, he has no duty to help the prosecution snare the perjury trap on him. That is not the law. As well, Mr. Berger is mistaken as to what an impeachment really is. Impeachment is a political indictment. In other words the House managers accused the President of perjury, which the Senate found him to be not guilty. Libby was found guilty, Clinton was not. The House managers failed to make their case, but the same old fantasy is still repeated by talk radio, and regurgitated by their listeners. Once out of office, Bill Clinton agreed to a 5 year suspension of his law license in return for prosecutors not pursuing perjury charges against him. It was a deal, not a punishment. Again, the old lie that "he was disbarred" still oozes to the surface every time President Clinton's name comes up. It's been seven years already! I just wish the Clinton haters out there would for once be honest with the rest of us, and admit that they have this irrational hatred for President Clinton, seek some professional help, and the rest of us can move on.
