For those that didn't see it: Morning Joe Charter School Debate Today & Next Thursday Show Debate
Edited on Fri Mar-19-10 10:42 PM by 1776Forever
I had to repost this -

If you didn't see it today Morning Joe got really contentious this morning. It seems Joe Scarborough is extremely in favor of charter schools, no wonder since his Republican background, and New York State Sen. Bill Perkins that was on really tried to give his viewpoint but it was hard for him to get his points across. State Sen. Perkins is going to have hearings on charter schools on the 22nd of April in NYC.

Next Thursday Morning Joe is having New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, Grammy-winning musician John Legend and the Rev. Al Sharpton. According to an e-mail to teachers from the Hillsborough County School Board, the political chat fest will take place in the cafeteria at Alexander Elementary School in Tampa. Reportedly the show will center on the state of public education and charter schools.

Morning Joe Defies Cable News Cliche With Strong Charter School Debate

.... today the Morning Joe crew proved they are also providing the most informative and relevant content in morning cable news programming with a debate on reconstructing the public school system that every parent in an at-risk community should pay close attention to.

Joe and Mika had New York State Sen. Bill Perkins on the show to debate the possible benefits of charter schools in urban communities– schools that do not have to follow certain government regulations in exchange for being expected to present better learning results. The senator, who is hosting a public forum to debate the matter, is concerned that the schools are not all they are chalked up to be. “Statistics don’t always tell the truth,” he responded to Scarborough’s citing of a Stanford University study showing that charter schools are wildly successful with a 91% population of underprivileged students. His skepticism stemmed from the clear racial differences between successful public schools and charter schools: “We are resegregating our public school system with charter schools.”

Scarborough was not convinced that his statistics were wrong - not that Perkins tried to use any counter-evidence against him. The increased flexibility in the classroom, he argued, was putting more and more underprivileged youth in college and bringing them up to required levels of reading and math proficiency at their grade level. It was a spirited and entertaining debate for anyone, but especially important for those directly affected by the proliferation of charter schools: parents, teachers, and students alike.

.........

Looks like a full court press for charter schools by Scarborough. Jeb Bush was all for them when he was Governor. I know that there is a lot of talk in Florida about the Charter Schools getting the money while the "regular" public schools are going without funding. I would like to hear from teachers and parents on what they think about this.

This is marching orders for the Repub's looks like. Scarborough must have something to do with this or he wouldn't be so fanatic about it. Maybe Gov. Bush asked him to get involved. I don't trust anything Jebbie boy is into.
