Interesting article, but I started wondering: What were the Republicans' "much less expensive" and "practical measures" in the Social Security battle? Anyone know?

Knowing what we now know about demographics, and how the Social Security program has changed over the years, would there have been a better alternative to the program that was passed in 1936? It would just be interesting to compare whatever the Republicans' ideas were back then to what our needs are today . . . Anyone know??
