DU Demographics: Race & Ethnicity

We haven't done these in a while, and I'm back in my polling rut.

I'm ripping off the 2000 Census categories for this one, although it seems a bit odd (especially the "some other race" bit), I can only hope they had some idea what they were doing. :eyes:

• White. A person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa. It includes people who indicate their race as "White" or report entries such as Irish, German, Italian, Lebanese, Near Easterner, Arab, or Polish.

• Black or African American. A person having origins in any of the Black racial groups of Africa. It includes people who indicate their race as 'Black, African Am., or Negro,' or provide written entries such as African American, Afro American, Kenyan, Nigerian, or Haitian.

• American Indian and Alaska Native. A person having origins in any of the original peoples of North and South America (including Central America) and who maintain tribal affiliation or community attachment.

• Asian. A person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, or the Indian subcontinent including, for example, Cambodia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippine Islands, Thailand, and Vietnam. It includes "Asian Indian," "Chinese," "Filipino," "Korean," "Japanese," "Vietnamese," and "Other Asian."

• Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander. A person having origins in any of the original peoples of Hawaii, Guam, Samoa, or other Pacific Islands. It includes people who indicate their race as "Native Hawaiian," "Guamanian or Chamorro," "Samoan," and "Other Pacific Islander."

• Some other race. Includes all other responses not included in the "White", "Black or African American", "American Indian and Alaska Native", "Asian" and "Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander" race categories described above. Respondents providing write-in entries such as multiracial, mixed, interracial, We-Sort, or a Hispanic/Latino group (for example, Mexican, Puerto Rican, or Cuban) in the "Some other race" category are included here.

• Two or more races. People may have chosen to provide two or more races either by checking two or more race response check boxes, by providing multiple write-in responses, or by some combination of check boxes and write-in responses.

11. Putting Hispanic/Latino as -Other- does seem a bit strange. If that's how the Govt put it

on the form in 2000, it's as if they were trying to diminish the percentage of that category.

I'm guessing it's because Latinos can be of any race or mixture of races, yet still have a common bond through culture and language? That's what I think anyway.

And does a Spaniard mark down white, hispanic, or both?

15. Generally they ask a seperate question for ethnicity --

yes/no Hispanic. I used to train people to ask these questions and the race/ethnicity distinction proved troublesome and confusing. I would say, "Sammy Sosa is black under race and yes under Ethnicity" while "Christina Aguilera is white under race and yes under ethnicity" The lines, however, are not always so clear and Hispanics would most often self-identify as "other" for race.

if I wanted to but yuck. Seems kind of like a racist organization. My Grandmother is one but I said no. My ancestors on my Dad's side came to New England around the mid 1600's.
On my Mom's side, her Grandparents came from Italy to Ellis Island in the early 1900's. Her other Grandparents came from Germany a bit after that.
