From a fundy relative
""Let me get this straight. The new Health Care Plan will be written by a committee whose Chairman says he doesn't understand it, passed by a Congress which hasn't read it, signed by a President who smokes, funded by a Treasury Secretary who did not pay his taxes, overseen by a Surgeon General who is obese, and financed... by a country that is nearly broke. What could possibly go wrong?" - Dr. Jeffrey Miron

BTW, Miron is a libertarian.

31. Depends on one's definition of "communitarian".
I am a libertarian when it comes to CENTRALIZED government power and hierarchy, but I am communitarian in how I see society and and local governance. I see society as a kind of superorganism.

11. And from the sound of this, her message is less about dress size than it is about general health
“Americans will be more likely to change their behavior if they have a meaningful reward--something more than just reaching a certain weight or dress size. The real reward is invigorating, energizing, joyous health. It is a level of health that allows people to embrace each day and live their lives to the fullest without disease or disability.”

21. If your relative is a "cHRISTIAN" fundy you may want to ask them
if they are really in any position to be
"throwing the first stone"

or remind the that Jesus himself warned his followers
"judge not lest ye be judged"

and not to
"store up for yourself treasures on earth"

and not to
"worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."

and that if they really want to follow Jesus he said to
"go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."

to consider that when asked about paying taxes Jesus said:
“Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s, and unto God the things that are God’s”
and
“Everyone to whom much is given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more.”

and my personal favorite would be THIS:

One day an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus by asking him this question: “Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus replied, “What does the law of Moses say? How do you read it?” The man answered, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.’ And, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” “Right!” Jesus told him. “Do this and you will live!” The man wanted to justify his actions, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

Jesus then replied with this parable-

“A Jewish man was traveling on a trip from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he was attacked by bandits. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him up, and left him half dead beside the road. By chance a priest came along. But when he saw the man lying there, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by. A Levite walked over and looked at him lying there, but he also passed by on the other side. Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him. Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with olive oil and wine and bandaged them. Then he put the man on his own donkey and took him to an inn, where he took care of him. The next day he handed the innkeeper two silver coins, telling him, ‘Take care of this man. If his bill runs higher than this, I’ll pay you the next time I’m here.’ “Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?” Jesus asked. The man replied, “The one who showed him mercy.” Then Jesus said, “Yes, now go and do the same.

I'm so tired of religion being used as a cover for the worst attitudes of humans, when much of the religious writings speak just the opposite of what is being used to justify greed, selfishness and hatred.

29. Ugh. They have no clue as to what's in the bill, it's all just shallow "attack the
messenger" nonsense. I oppose the bill because of the mandates, lack of a public option or price controls-but those are all things that free market nuts should adore. May as well tell him that he shouldn't comment on something that he's never researched.

32. It takes to power of a strong centralized state to create an "unregulated free market"
because in less centralized, less authoritarian conditions local communities enforce a control and regulation of markets that develops organically.
