one of my facebook "friends" posted this screed about the bill, and how she dared the CIA to come get her for talking about it, blah blah... i suspected she was s religious fruitcake, not just a normal religious person before this, but now it's confirmed.

... and I can tell you that anyone who categorizes what we pay for healthcare coverage as "paying through the nose" is either lying, or insane.

If she's Canadian, why does she think the CIA - or any other US organization - will come and get her, force her to be micro-chipped? Is she aware that Canada and the US are two separate countries, with separate governments? You might want to point that out to her, as she seems to be confused about the matter.

In 2007, I experienced what I call a "medical misadventure" - I was given pennicillin, not knowing I had developed an allergy to it since the last time I'd taken it, more than twenty years previous. I spent many a night in the ER as symptoms of the allergy progressed and manifested themselves - and yes, I had to wait my turn like everyone else - imagine that!

The hospital DID NOT push aside car-crash victims or those in cardiac arrest in order to treat MOI first - talk about a system gone awry!

As things turned out, my condition was potentially fatal - I was given a 50-50 chance of pulling through. Over a period of several months, I was treated by a number of specialists, including four-times weekly visiting RNs who came to my home and checked on my progress and advised on how to deal with what was happening, blood work on a regular basis, monitoring of vital signs, medication, even advice on the proper diet to combat the ravages of what my body perceived to have been a "poisoning" of my system.

Thanks to dedicated healthcare workers, I survived - at an out-of-pocket cost of zero, nil, nada, zilch.

Ask your FB friend if she'd like to trade places with an uninsured US resident - or show her what she'd be paying to get the kind of medical treatment she thinks she deserves. But then that would involve facing the facts - obviously something she has no acquaintance with.

I have many real-life Canadian friends (what with me living in their country and all), and they are APPALLED by what they've learned about the US healthcare system over the past year.

Until the revelations that have come up in the US press/media in discussions about HCR, they had NO idea that US citizens could actually be bankrupted by morally-bankrupt insurance providers.

I admit that I wasn't as cognizant of the blessings of the Canadian healthcare system until my little "misadventure" - when I realized that had I been living in the States, even with "heathcare insurance" paid for at exorbitant prices, I would have been on-the-hook for tens of thousands of dollars for the treatment I required - as my allergy to penicillin would have been deemed a pre-existing condition, despite the fact that I could not possibly have known about it until after-the-fact.

I have been berated on DU many times for weighing-in on the topic of HCR, because I live in Canada and as someone who "has mine", I've been told I shouldn't be opining on what my fellow citizens DON'T have.

It is in fact my residence in a country that has a SANE healthcare system that makes me adamant about HCR for all Americans.

My daughter woke up this morning with severe abdominal pain. She was in too much pain to go to one of the clinics in the neighbourhood (there are three within walking distance, BTW - and, of course, we can choose any one of them, or ANY clinic or doctor in the city.)

Anyway, I simply called MedVisit and asked for a doctor to make a house call. An hour later, the doctor was here to examine her in her own home.

He immediately arranged for her to have an ultrasound tomorrow morning, to confirm what he suspects is the problem.

And yes, it's all COVERED, one hundred percent - the tests and the at-home visit.

So much for a requirement to wait your turn at an ER when you're in dire straits ...
