Assuming all the seats are filled, it takes 218 votes to pass a bill. Not all the seats are filled though, so 216 is the magic number right now.
A tied votes results in the bills defeat.

when it's time to put this over the top, i trust pelosi, reid and obama. no way they'd let it go this far to fall short. i think they know the outcome before putting their necks on the line.
