Teabaggers SPIT ON my favorite congressman today. Yes they spit on him!!!!
I just can't put into words how deeply I despise the teabaggers.

Rep. Emanuel Cleaver's (D-MO) office issued the following statement this evening after Cleaver alleged that an anti-health care reform protester spat on him as he entered the Capitol today.

In response to an incident earlier today, Congressman Cleaver's office has issued the following statement:

For many of the members of the CBC, like John Lewis and Emanuel Cleaver who worked in the civil rights movement, and for Mr. Frank who has struggled in the cause of equality, this is not the first time they have been spit on during turbulent times.

This afternoon, the Congressman was walking into the Capitol to vote, when one protester spat on him. The Congressman would like to thank the US Capitol Police officer who quickly escorted the others Members and him into the Capitol, and defused the tense situation with professionalism and care. After all the Members were safe, a full report was taken and the matter was handled by the US Capitol Police. The man who spat on the Congressman was arrested, but the Congressman has chosen not to press charges. He has left the matter with the Capitol Police.

This is not the first time the Congressman has been called the "n" word and certainly not the worst assault he has endured in his years fighting for equal rights for all Americans. That being said, he is disappointed that in the 21st century our national discourse has devolved to the point of name calling and spitting. He looks forward to taking a historic vote on health care reform legislation tomorrow, for the residents of the Fifth District of Missouri and for all Americans. He believes deeply that tomorrow's vote is, in fact, a vote for equality and to secure health care as a right for all. Our nation has a history of struggling each time we expand rights. Today's protests are no different, but the Congressman believes this is worth fighting for.

26. I think so, too. This country has been in denial about racism, and this clearly
demonstrates that it is alive and "well".

Its time to deal openly with prejudice, and that isn't only race.

ALL prejudice, including toward homeless people. It is all the same process.

Too bad he didn't press charges.

62. I don't think too many people with more than 2 synapses actively firing are in denial about racism
The only question is the extent to which it infests our society. We have just now recently (historically speaking) reached the point where the country is almost exclusively politically divided along the lines of racism. As the strongest racists have more control over the GOP, they feel more empowered about being more overt with their feelings. I have no doubt they WILL continue to get bolder. The only question is if they will be put in their place before they start putting up "White Only" signs again.

If that's your position(perhaps it is, perhaps it isn't), I can't agree. And although I'm sure there are people who think racism is no longer an "issue", I don't think that's anywhere near the mainstream view.

Disagree all you want.

Those who are on the receiving end of prejudice KNOW the reality.

But then, we usually aren't HEARD.

78. I'm not sure how one could progress without the other
Laws are a reflection of the community. It's pretty difficult to change laws without first changing mindsets. That's not to say prejudice doesn't still occur and I fully conceded as much and will thank you not to imply otherwise.

What I suspect that you "KNOW" is your own reality, which I'm not trying to minimalize, but unless you came of age 50 years ago(and actually even if you did), I don't think you can attest to any lack of progress simply based on your own anecdotal information.

we would like to tell ourselves it is.

121. I know of not one major piece of legislation that didn't follow many years of changed mindsets
If you can think of a relevant example, please enlighten me.

I don't get into pissing matches. I engage in discussion which involves the exchanging of ideas which need not involve consensus. If what you want is a soapbox to offer only one sided ideas, please let me know and I'll refrain from replying.

You probably don't realize it, but your own statements are racist. You suggest that a "white" progressive can't possibly know racism because they haven't experienced it. This is a racist statement. White people do experience racism and other bigotries and I can give you all sorts of examples. I'm not pointing this out to inflame, but I'm giving this as an example that sometimes people make racist statements without realizing it even if they never intended to do so. One has to be very careful about judging progression based on an extremely limited perspective.

Racism will never lessen in racists and only seems to lessen to some because it has generally gone more underground. If we are lucky, racists themselves, as they die out, will not be replaced on a 1 by 1 basis by their children.

Think of simply the EEOC where Clarence Thomas!!! was put in charge --

for decades they've done nothing --

And constant attacks on Affirmative Action by right wing --

And, I'm sure that AA's here could tell us much more --

I'm just reading a book about how far backwards women's rights have been taken

and no difference with other "minorities."

Old story . . . one step forward, two steps backwards --

:)

Sorry if I sound angry, it certainly isn't with you!!

Repug Party, itself, hasn't given up its personal racism which comes on display

quite frequently!!

The Misinformed Tea Party Movement

For an antitax group, they don't know much about taxes.

It's hard to explain this divergence between perception and reality. Perhaps these people haven't calculated their tax returns for 2009 yet and simply don't know what they owe. Or perhaps they just assume that because a Democrat is president that taxes must have gone up, because that's what Republicans say that Democrats always do. In fact, there hasn't been a federal tax increase of any significance in this country since 1993.

42. It was an honest observation
I feel like a lot of people were being used like tools, whether or not they knew better. Its a bitter pill to swallow. People in the streets demanding "healthcare now" aren't going to get it. They are simply a mouthpiece for an industry movement towards mandated & subsidized private for-profit insurance.

I feel sorry for this person. They probably worked their ass off and will have little to show for it. Thats incredibly unfortunate, but if "the fight" is worth it in itself, then all the power to them. Im not that kind of person. Id rather get real results, whether its half as hard or twice that. And the last thing Id want to be is some tool for a movement that reduces me to a statistical political football to pass a political agenda.

Im not denigrating this person one bit. My heart feels for them and everyone else that wanted something of substance.

72. Yes, "invaded" is the word.
Mayhem (and the status quo, God help us) is the name of the game, and of course, as someone upthread observed, the media has given this noisy but relatively small group the lion's share of the attention. That's reflective of a lot of things, including the current state of the media...

Anyway, thanks for getting out there, and I'm sorry you had to put u with this nonsense.

Eventually, history will bury them in the dust. They know it. So they lash out with spit. It's all they have left unless they want to take a trip to death row some day.

They better quit while they're behind and can still go home to grind their back teeth in the comfort of their cliques.

43. ABsolutely, he was on the Edmund Pettus Bridge, not the Bridge To Nowhere.
All these years, and we trumpet how much we have "changed", and it takes so little for the ugliness to rear its head. It never went away, and now surely the nation can see that.

I don't want to admit that I fear for lives in all of this..... I clearly remember 4 beautiful little girls dying in a church gone up in flames.

I also know that the ugliness that went underground became directed toward poor folk, and there weren't people who challenged that. That angers and saddens me, and now it looks like we are headed toward a real firestorm. Maybe we can manage, this time, to actually deal with it all head on.

Only, it doesn't all belong on Lewis' shoulders.

Stand up, folks. Some of us are very visible targets.

"lashing out with spit". "WE'RE NUMBER ONE"

44. That is disgusting - and this will work against them
IMHO, today was a turning point in the coverage. The media has, until today, gone out of its way to show examples of tea partiers who were clean cut family people, often with kids. They gave enormous coverage to the huge (600 people) "convention" and have declared them to be a powerful grassroots movement.

But, led to hatred, by their radio show leaders, they have lost any concept of how extreme they are. The actions today are far from acceptable behavior. The fact is that they should have been called on their rudeness to the Congressmen who did town halls - asking tough questions is great, but their behavior last August was not. Today's are being covered and they are shameful.

81. Supposedly that is an urban myth. It never happened.
The worst was that they were shunned. No one was there meeting them waving flags and praising them for their service like happened in WWII. The spit was metaphorical and the RW went with it like it really happened. It didn't. I asked many Vietnam vets when I was a bartender if they were mistreated and none of them said they were, just ignored. Of course my experience is anecdotal. Here are some more testimonies.

http://message.snopes.com/showthread.php?t=2360

It seems anti-war and pro-war protesters spit on each other, but there was a lot more violence in the protests back then.

82. Of course. But you miss my point entirely.
Even if it was invented -- which I could've mentioned in my comment but DOESN'T MATTER --

Republicans repeated it for 40 years nevertheless.

Do you really think Doormat-o-crats will remember this by next Friday?

There are 1000+ bigger outrages from George W. Bush that Doormat-o-crats FORGOT>

Do you remember James Byrd? Black man dragged to his death behind a pickup truck in Jasper, Texas, while Bush was Texas Governor? Bush REFUSED TO MEET WITH THE BYRD FAMILY.

Is that bigger than spitting on Lewis?

When was the last time a Doormat-o-crat remembered that one about Bush?

86. No, it is true - I was hitchiking home on a leave, wearing my uniform
in 1970, when a passing car slowed. Thinking I was aboug to get a ride, I looked over, just in time to dodge spit and a thrown beer bottle, partly full, and listen to the laughter of the people inside as they drove off, leaving me several milse from my destination.
It is true, and it happened to me.
