1. Corporatist Bill thus satisfying the Military-industrial complex folks
2. So-called 'pro-lifers' kudos without having to really 'do' anything
3. New customers for insurance companies and so therefore:
4. Health insurance reform which at least will (eventually) get rid of rescission and pre-existing conditions rules
5. A big loss and bad exposure for those 'charming' elected Republicans and their Tea-party racists/homophobes constituency.

Now maybe he didn't do it (all) deliberately, but hoo nose?

health care reform passed for the first time in history despite the handwringing.

The irrelevant handwringing by some will continue while others go about implementing reform and improving on those things that need to be.
