Freepers going Galt!!!!

I give them 3 weeks out in the wilds before they more closely resemble the Donner party than any delusional Ayn Rand fantasy.

5. Do they not see the irony in this:
We bought our farm in central Kentucky last August. The Fed Gov even paid us $8k for doing it. We can be completely self sufficient there. And even if the $234 a year property tax DOUBLES, we can live there for quite a while spending almost nothing.

47. well, they don't want to feed into the US economy in any way
I guess if they buy from a US company, some US employees will get paid and pay INCOME TAXES on the money, and use their salary to buy stuff and pay SALES TAX, and maybe also use their money to pay PROPERTY TAXES. So not supporting the US economy helps "starve the beast" of big gummint.

I believe that's the so-called "thinking"...

"hopefully we get an inheritance from the remaining parental unit"

Nothing like hoping that your parent dies. God, that's sickening. I'm probably going to inherit a nice chunk of money some day and you know what? I dread that day. I hope I'm so old when it happens that I don't know how to spend it. I sure as hell don't factor it into my future plans and I sure as hell don't hope for it.

I'm constantly trying to talk my parents into spending more money on themselves. I encourage them to take trips and tried to get them to buy a condo down South to get away from the Maryland winters. My Mom talks about wanting to leave us money and I tell her I don't want it. I just want them to be happy and healthy and hopefully live to be 100+.

Fucking disgusting freepers make me sick.

I've actually been out there (once) on a hunting trip. I can't to this day begin to understand why anyone would place poor Chris on a pedestal. He was a misguided, idealogical depressive and didn't belong anywhere in a "survival" situation, much less interior Alaska.

45. cilla, more than sad - there have been several others try it.
Trying to emulate poor Chris, and winding up either being evacuated in very sad shape or hiking out in same sad shape. The movie made the story a sensation once again. Kids are trying this "lifestyle" on for size, and there are VERY few it will fit. This is NOT the place to try out a self-sufficient life unless your great-great-grandparents were born to it.

One rescued kid thought his laptop would save him. There is not even landline, let alone cell/satellite coverage in most of this state.

The book and movie were good, but no one who has lived here a while (I've been here over 40 years) will tell you that either were in any way realistic.

46. ...and then there are these Gandhi gems
"The Jews should have offered themselves to the butcher's knife. They should have thrown themselves into the sea from cliffs." - in reference to the Holocaust.

Gandhi never quite seemed to realize that the non-violence he urged against the British would have failed horribly if applied to the Nazis. He urged the British to surrender, and suggested that the Czechs and even the Jews (as noted above) would have been better off committing heroic mass suicide.

If saying his wife looked "like a meek cow" was not evidence of his rank misogyny (to accompany his latent anti-semitism), then consider that she died when he refused to allow her to get a life saving shot of penicillin after she contracted pneumonia. He was, you see, opposed to modern medicine. But not fanatically opposed, since after her death he allowed himself to be treated with quinine for his malaria and allowed his appendix to be removed by surgeons. Nice guy, huh?

Fuck Gandhi. What a charlatan.

51. They're also hinting at violence:

To: kindredspirit

It’s understandable that everyone wants to do this painlessly and without much sacrifice. But that doesn’t get it done.
Remember what 0bama’s wife said. He’s going to move you out of your comfort zone. Well, better you move yourself out before he does it for you. Whatever sacrifice you make, whatever discomfort you face, should at least be your option. And in the end, what it does is thwart 0bama and his plans to bring “fundamental change” to America.
So do it on your terms, and don’t expect it to be easy.

And you, kindredspirit — I haven’t read the whole thread and don’t know your situation, which you may have mentioned already, but it all depends on your present situation. Your age, career, marital status, credit, health...all sorts of things factor in. However, in general...

Some of the first steps I’d recommend include, in no special order:
cut out cable tv and rely on the internet
get the kids out of public school
quit one job if your household has two
sell one car if you have two
pay off the house and the car
buy gold, silver, and lead
get a cheap cell phone that you pay less than $10/month for, and buy the minutes as needed
don’t use credit cards
learn a useful skill that will be an essential one if the country goes completely down the tubes
move to a rural area where taxes are low; you can still buy a foreclosure for a few hundred dollars, you just have to look around

Do all the above and you don’t even need a full time job. You can drive a cab or deliver pizza and get by.

The more radical types have other options but we won’t get into that! : )

61. Actually, they're beyond going galt. They're going AMISH!
Not kidding.

"On this thread and others I hope Freepers will discuss the ins and outs of becoming Amish. I'm not joking. Forget the Jews, the Amish are the chosen people this time around. God has favored them to be exempt from Kommie Kare and I want in on this. Your thoughts and strategies are valued. Legal opinions too.

If I declare myself Amish am I Amish? I think I've always been Amish but just forgot to mention it to others"

HAHAHAAHAHAAHAAA!!!

The quicker they are out of our society, the better.

...the idea of as many of them as possible getting their worthless, un-wanted asses off of US soil as soon as possible. These greasy trash bags have been littering Our Nation and Great Society for far too long.
