It's nice that more people will be insured, but will this reduce my costs?

1. It should
is this a personal health policy or is it an outrageous amount that you have to cover from your employer?

19. Thanks.
I'm in a group plan at work and earn more than 4 times the poverty level.

This is all very confusing, but it looks like this bill will not affect me at all except for the maximum limits.

I think it's great that it will help other people, but I pay way too much and have too many limitations on benefits. I just wish it would help me too and not put more profit into the hands of the insurance companies.

I'd vote for it.

21. How do you know that, without asking about the person's income and type of insurance?
Is the bill "supposed to" reduce costs for absolutely everyone? If so, how much?

5. If you go into the future exchange and qualify for subsidies...
Edited on Sun Mar-21-10 07:24 PM by Oregone
It will hide the cost but not necessarily reduce per capita income (so your wages will still suffer and those costs may end up in the grocery store).

Of course, you may only get a low actuarial plan there that costs more out of pocket than your current plan does per year (I don't know the details of your current plan)

It is undetermined if this legislation will reduce per capita health expenditures at all. If it does not, those costs don't go away, but get shifted, and eventually, everyone pays for them anyway, some way or another.

6. It sounds like the going rate if you pay out of pocket - if your income is low enough
it will be subsidized. However, if you ever get sick - they can't refuse to insure you or cap your benefits.

9. I thought there is still a yearly cap (not lifetime, but you only live so long)
And rescission is allowed still in case of "fraud"

12. But apparently there is nothing to stop them
from raising your rates to the point where you can no longer afford the mandatory insurance if you get sick. And that subsidy considers only your income - not the relationship of your health care premium cost to your income. And it isn't clear whether the only income considered is work related income or all taxable income or all sources of household funds - a significant distinction for some.

14. When I walk into a voting booth
it is all about me, like it or not. I vote for the candidate that serves to advance and protect my needs and interests and desires. Meaningful access to affordable healthcare is one of my highest priorities. Best I can tell the pending legislation isn't going to do much if anything to improve my circumstances - and I haven't seen a friggin doctor for 15 years.

18. So you won't complain when you are forced to pay that amount?
and the other people are being FORCED to purchase FOR PROFIT INSURANCE, not "health care". Let's at least be honest about it.

30. No, I think there is exaggeration here
People can afford it or will get subsidies, which, may I remind you, are being paid for by SOMEBODY ELSE.

You are ungrateful for someone else paying for a high portion of your health insurance.

Can't he worry about his own costs as well?

Didn't Obama promised both to expand coverage and reduce costs for the typical Americans by $2,500 a year?

I'm supposed to feel bad for the middle class (to which I belong?)

Talk about selfish. And you'd probably slam the rich as selfish. The rich have nothing on the middle class.

34. The rich have plenty on the middle class
Someone in the top 1 or 2 percent never has to think what their health insurance premium might be. I was middle class before the economy crashed but $14,400 a year for a premium did absolutely affect us when we had to use my COBRA. Expenses like that can knock someone out of the middle class pretty quickly.

Not sure what your income is or what you have now.
