This is blowing my mind
The Republicans have been totally pantsed. Every single one of them has literally had their pants pulled down.

This cannot possibly have happened by accident, can it?

Not so willy-nilly, or randomized (though as a matter that speaks to freedoms I am able to reserve them as well) certainly less than likely stuck in an immovable, intransigent fringe mindset, but: *opened*, and, 2) I've been using that multi pass pic for some time mostly while saying "Sup?" to new DUers and stuff like that well I guess 3,

81. No, surprising when the Dems have been acting like the minority party.
Crappy bill, weak bill, and it took the Dems "only" a year to do it. Good lordy, I'm just glad they finally grew the small pair it took to realize that the Rethugs were beating them even with a "veto proof" majority, and there might just be another way to get business done.

101. Minority mindset or not, they're "safe" now
Handing the country over to corporate greed is what keeps them in the game. If they keep doing it, they won't even have to worry about the limitless campaign donations problem... as it will seem moot when the wheels come off this country for good.

28. This is no accident. It's what Obama does to his political opponents.
He lets them box themselves in with their own bullshit, then he sets the box on fire. He just eviscerated every Republican in congress, and he did it without raising his voice. Now they have to go back to their constituents and explain why they let the socialists win. Then, when this thing actually kicks in and starts to help people, they get to explain why they opposed it with such utterly irrational, spittle-flinging fury.

she's not such a great or inspirational speaker and I tended to think she was shallow or hollow but I kept hearing she was a tough speaker and gave her the benefit of the doubt.

After so many congresses with big democratic majorities have failed, you gotta give Nancy some credit too.

Do you care that Pelosi has helped keep the wars going the last three years,

re-funding them and bankrutping our Treasury?

Do you care if she has private meetings with the US Catholic Bishops and has

recently taken a telephone call from "Rome" over the Stupak abortion issue?

Do you care about Separatiom of Church & State or do you agree that taxpayers

should be subsdizing the Vatican's "faith-based" organizations?

Know anyone who needs reproductive care -- contraception? Abortion/CHOICE?

Public education?

Title IX?

Unions?

Equal pay?

Gays/Lesbians?

Do you care if Pelosi is a DLC/Corporate Democrat?

This is a victory for corporations/lobbyists and DLC/Corporate Democrats --

and bodes ill for women's issues and any future universal health care which would

treat every American equally. It also introduces the GOP dream of INCOME

TESTING into the system. Something they have long wanted to use re Social Security

76. I'm not as enamored of the corporatist label as you are
This is a very complex society. Corporations are not going away and I'm not sure they have as much power as you seem to think. Our congress people had to make a choice between no change or some reform, and what they were able to achieve since there are plenty of right-wing Democrats or those with unsafe seats who apparently had to vote with their eye on their next opponent, or their constituency, who may not be as enlightened as you. People like Stupak who are opposed to abortion rights are not going away, as much as I, as an old school feminist who used to do pro-choice escorting, would like them to. I think we needed change to hold insurance companies to account and to insure more people overall and to stop PEC denials for kids immediately, etc. and there had to be some compromises to achieve those gains, no matter how small.

I personally think no one has any business who receives any abortion, Michael Moore made a good point when he said that countries where abortion is legal and funded by UHC lead to fewer abortions. But I'm not going to change the minds of fanatics and neither are my Congress people. I think it was a pragmatic improvement, with compromises, as most legislation tends to be in this society. I would love to see UHC. But I think that would have taken a lot more convincing - I wrote to my CP, my Senators, etc. and urged them to support UHC. This did not happen. Maybe it will in my lifetime, I don't know. As far as Pelosi talking to the Vatican, please name a Speaker who has not done that (many of the recent Dem ones were Catholics)

Also I support Pelosi - she's pretty good at herding cats and I am still thrilled to see a woman in that position of power. As far as the wars are concerned, no, I think we need to get out. But getting out takes time, and I think we will see those wars end much sooner than if McCain had been elected.

I don't know why you are listing all those other issues when the thread is about health care reform. I can't speak to the SS/Medicare issues since I don't know much about that. All I know about that, is that my 82 year old father who uses Medicare and receives SS, supported this bill.

85. We were limited in this health care decision only by corporations ...
Edited on Mon Mar-22-10 01:29 PM by defendandprotect
and DLC Corporate-Democrats -- Baucus, for one -- heavily subsdized by the
"for profit" health care industry.
Obama, as well --

If we work to end the myth of corporate "personhood" corporations could go away --
They were begun to SERVE the public, not to run government.
And, they were controlled at that time by very strong regulations and oversight.

The public supported single payer/MEDICARE FOR ALL by 77% -- including Catholic
support up to 73% and more! It was only by ignoring what the public wanted and
pandering to corporate interests that we ended up with this bill. It also signals
heavy control of the Democratic Party by the DLC and Corporate Democrats.
These are the very same insurance corportations which Pres. obama has branded "evil."

We have right wing Corporate-Democrats because DLC solicits and sponsors them even against
liberal incumbents! GOP Corporate allies have also been targeting liberal/progessive
Democrats for decades.

I certainly don't expect the US Catholic Bishops, the Vatican, or Stupak anti-abortion
movement to go away. I do expect the government and the Democratic Patty to uphold the
law -- Roe vs Wade -- and to provide protection for women's clinics and doctors.

Neither is the liberal/progressive movement going away, they are the base of the Democratic
Party, yet they are being ignored while right wing corporations, anti-abortionists and
Vatican are being catered to!
In fact, this bill goes against the wishes of 77% of the public!

Everyone here favors CHANGE, holding insurance companies acountable -- insuring the
uninsured -- end the farce of PEC and life time caps -- but there was no necessity to
"compromise" in any way with insurance companies nor to reward them with hundreds of
billions of dollars in subsidies.

Indeed, all that would have taken was a single payer system, which Kucinich confirms
Obama could have done right after the election. Rather, Obama made a private deal
with the insurance companies that there would be NO government run health care.
How did you feel when Cheney made private deals with the Energy Industry?

I see you recognize the harm that anti-abortion movement does re creating more of a
need for abortion in America than in other countries. Neither of us expect to change
the minds of fanatics . . but I don't expect my government to pander to them with
"abstinence programs" and by meeting with US Catholic Bishops in private -- or by
subsidizing the Vatican! I strongly support Separation of Church & State.

Presumably, Catholics do meet with Catholic notables . . . ?
But, this was specifically in response to Stupak and this health care legislation.
I think it was inappropriate on Pelosi's part -- unethical.

I'm also happy to see more women in government -- but I'm always aware that many programs
to affirm female participation have been reversed.

We should also keep in mind what former Justice Thurgood Marhsall said as he was retiring
and the nation was awaiting Poppy Bush nominating a new Justice. Everyone was hopeful that
he would appoint another AA to the seat . . .

Justice Thurgood Marshall cautioned us that, "It's not the color of a snake that's important
-- what's important is whether or not it bites!"

Same thinking would hold true for gender -- of course.

And Poppy Bush nominated Clarence Thomas. We subsequently learned of his perversions . . .
even from his close friends who revealed that he was a lover "of hard core pornography."
Many female employees of the EEOC were ready to testify against Thomas, but were never
called by then Sen. Joe Biden who kept the hearings going to 4am -- but betrayed the
lawyers who represented Prof. Anita Hill and these women.

There is always the "lesser of evils" being played here at DU and it's really based on fear.
Pelosi had simply to stop funding the wars. They are bankrupting the Treasury. That could
have been done 3 years ago, and in fact the morning after '06, Pelosi -- on video --
announced that "Democrats were elected to end the war!"

Yes, McCain would like a 100 year war -- but what of liberal/progressives and what they
would have done?

I don't know why you are listing all those other issues when the thread is about health care reform. I can't speak to the SS/Medicare issues since I don't know much about that. All I know about that, is that my 82 year old father who uses Medicare and receives SS, supported this bill.

Contraception and reproductive freedom were issues in this bill -- with women losing.
Contraception has gotten so expensive for young girls/women that they are making decisions
between contraception and groceries. Expense is yet one more way to deprive people of birth
control.

Further, I presume you support the ideal of "equality for all"?
This is a tiered-health care bill which treats every citizen differently according to
income. There are classes: Gold, Bronze, Silver.

INCOME TESTING is a nasty bit of work, especially when applied to Social Security and
Medicare. Citizens go from being equals in the Social Security/Medicare programs to being
"welfare" and "charity" cases.

UNIONS are also important to our nation -- Trumka and the AFL-CIO opposed this bill, but they
also folded. If that suggests to you that unions will be under attack by this administration
and Corporate Democrats, then you'd be correct.

I'd also suggest you read some of the reports by Madlforidian on our schools, public
education. Obama is supporting charter schools vs public schools -- and blaming teachers
for the problems with our schools. Teachers have one of the largest unions.
Corporations are strong anti-union.

Well, next up will be cuts to Medicare . . . and likely Social Security.
Evidently, Obama is appointing a panel -- which looked rather right wing -- to
study these "entitlements."

Capitalism/corporatism is based on exploitation -- not only of nature, natural resources,
animal-life -- but of other human beings according to various myths of inferiority.

118. ...because GOP didn't want ANY bill
Uh.... that's the point.

Repugs thought they could stop Dems from doing ANYTHING... the back log in the Senate is proof. What all this did was show that Repugs have NOTHING to offer. They revealed it themselves. Their (lousy) amendments are in the bill, there was the "Gang of 6" giving them equal say even though they didn't deserve it, meetings with the Prez. to discuss what they want... all in full view of America and the World. And they STILL TO A PERSON did not vote for it.

Could there be a bigger show of "We're useless, obsolete, cheaters" for all to see?

Maybe there is. What's next that they will demand input on? Now there's no reason to take them seriously. The hysterics will probably get even more embarrassing now that it can become law! Like suing the Fed Government. Everyone sees it. Everyone knows it. They're useless.

Edited on Mon Mar-22-10 10:30 PM by defendandprotect
and though I will be thrilled if there is ever anything to celebrate about

this bill, any political competitition is secondary.

Democrats could have gone to reconciliation much earlier --

I do agree with you that if you're watching Olberman, Schultz, or Rachel you

probably have a firm idea that Republicans are destroyers -- if you're watching

anythings else, I'm not sure. And I'll try to be encouraged by your enthusiasm

that Americans will completely wake up re the right wing --

Will try to have confidence that this will be a good bill to help Americans and

that more improvements will be made to it.

Meanwhile . . .

meetings with the Prez. to discuss what they want... all in full view of America and the World

Unfortunately Obama also quite some long time back also had private meetings with insurance

companies and promised them there would be 'NO GOVERNMENT RUN HEALTH CARE PLAN" --

Obama also made a private deal at the White House with Big Pharma resulting in assurances there

would be no negotiations on pricing -- guaranteeing their exhorbitant profits will continue -

and that Americans will pay 8X what people in other countries are paying.

Why are we bothering to elect a Congress?

Well recall how we felt when Cheney was making private deals with the Energy Industry --

and subsequently ENRON catastrophe.

Again -- I dearly hope those celebrating this are right and that Americans will be helped and

not harmed by this bill.

138. Because it wasn't their turn.
The Republicans are owned by the corporations, big CEO's. The Democrats, thanks to the DLC are rapidly catching up -- unless we take back our party before it's too late.

The Repubs knew the Dems HAD to shove the bill thru to keep big pharma and insurance corps happy. All the Repubs had to do was sit back and act angry.

It's a win-win for the Repubs. Bill loses, they claim Dems are incompetent. Bill passes, they attack the terms of the bill to an already angry public and use that anger to take back the House and Senate in November.

But no matter how much that bill makes you want to puke, the one good thing that came out of this is that the Dems proved (to themselves) that they can win other than through that stupid holy grail of 60-vote "veto proof" majority with no Dem dissent. The more interesting question now is whether they will use this new understanding for good, or whether they'll creep back to their old ways and nothing will come of it.

126. Now, Maybe ...
Democrats will start believing in our mission, even if we have to do the political thing and get half a loaf.

134. Who would have thought it would feel like this afterward?

Even if the bill is not all we want, once the public gets a taste of this, some relief from their medical bills, they are not going to go back to de-regulated capitalist conservatism.

I don't think the mandated insurance purchases are workable, but that will be worked out in the next round, with the conservative/repub/teabaggers still in retreat.

144. It's worth the two years of working the phones....
Calling all over the country for health care reform, being hung up on, being called a bitch, a c**t, a socialist, a communist, etc., etc., etc. I wish I knew a "nya, nya" song so I could buy a one-page ad in the local paper for all the people who told me "You're wasting your time--it'll never happen". Ah yes...it's worth it. :woohoo:

Even if you just signed a petition or wrote your congressman, you're part of it, too! Congratulations!
