6. Bit.ly is a URL shortener... the original URL was too large...

I use bit.ly all the time to shorten up URLs. It's safe.

As you can see, DU has reduced the length while retaining enough identifying information so all users will be confident the link is what it is purported to be. Quite a number of people on this board won't click a link that isn't easily decipherable, so using a URL shortener actually works against your interests if you wish everyone to visit the sites to which you link.
