Nancy Pelosi appreciation thread |
|
Edited on Mon Mar-22-10 09:58 AM by Cyrano
Almost every Democrat since Harry Truman has been trying to pass a health care bill. And none have been able to do it for 65 years.
The bill passed yesterday, with all its flaws, is a start. It's impossible to tell how much pressure was put on by President Obama because whatever he did was behind the scenes.
But there's no doubt as to what Nancy Pelosi accomplished. It's been said that pulling Democrats together is like herding cats. And yesterday, Nancy managed to make enough cats fall in line.
She's been demonized by the Republicans ever since the day she became speaker. I can't remember any other Speaker of the House taking as much crap as has been thrown at her. And she should be very proud today of having withstood the onslaught and getting this bill passed.
This is one tough lady who stands tall above the garbage heap called the Republican Party. And we should all be proud of her today, and give her our sincere thanks and appreciation. Much remains to be done on health care, but this was step one.
Nancy, if you or anyone on your staff ever looks at DU, know that many of us here think you've done an outstanding job under incredibly difficult circumstances. Thank you.

1. I will call her today. Thank you for the suggestion. She's one tough lady. |
|
And yes, I really meant "lady." She did it all with dignity and grace, even when you could tell she was angry. There were times that I had my doubts about whether she was tough enough. I have no doubts anymore.

She has been as devastating to this country as BushCo with her constant willingness to kiss up to corporations.

Every single elected official is "on the take" one way or another. You don't get into office otherwise.
Whatever your opinion of her, you can't deny what she pulled off yesterday.

I know, the logic behind that statement- that fighting that particular battle would hinder us from getting a Democratic congress AND a Democratic President- was so flawed, wasn't it?

38. Easily the most powerful woman in the United States |
|
She is a masterful Speaker, on a par with LBJ and Tip O'Neil - in an easily arguable tougher time. DC was less polarized when those men were Speaker and they had huge majorities.

19. Actually what she achieved made history - this bill will have the impact of |
|
the Social Security Act and the Medicare bills, and it was done despite complete and total opposition of the GOP - not one single vote from the minority party. AND little support at all from the media. No other major bill has been passed in this way. Pelosi has been a great Democratic leader. I did give her a lot of criticism over this bill, but she has my real honest admiration and respect.
No wonder the republicans hate her so much.
Step up, Harry Reid....

27. Hi, old mark. I find it discouraging that so many DUers don't |
|
appreciate what she's done. Talk about climbing a mountain with weights tied to your legs.
There are many here on DU who are not ignorant, yet aren't aware of the battles waged in the 20th century to get us all the current benefits we have.
The Republicans have been successful at pinning derogatory terms to benefits that people payed for during their working years. And far too many believe them and buy the crap they're selling.
People complain that Nancy Pelosi has taken contributions from some of the disgusting industries that own and run this country. I'm shocked. Shocked. Nobody gets elected without these contributions. (Well, maybe Ross Perot who used his own money and lost.) Nonetheless, far too many people don't appreciate what she pulled off yesterday. And that's a shame.

We'd all like to see it happen. Unfortunately, given today's corporate owned media, the Republican Party and blue dog Democrats, no politician can fight more than one major battle at a time.
