Vegetarian activists try in-your-face tactics
Source: CNN

Wearing lettuce bikinis, two "Lettuce Ladies" urge passersby to go vegetarian during a PETA protest in Sydney, Australia

(CNN) -- Not content to sit quietly at home eating their tofu cutlets, more and more vegetarians, it seems, are taking action, trying to get the carnivorous masses to change their ways.

Of course, the meat-free have been trying to win people over to their cause since the time of Pythagoras. But lately, activists are trying more in-your-face tactics.

2. I dislike proselytizers of any form
and PETA using women's bodies to sell their "product" is disgusting to everyone but male chauvinist pigs.

I say this as someone who doesn't eat meat, only occasional fish. It doesn't matter that I think if more people did more meatless meals every week, we'd have a healthier culture. That meat 3 times a day diet is killing us.

However, this is repellent.

As an omnivore myself, I agree. I loves me some meat, but eating so much of it is not what nature intended... as much as not eating any. Evolution has made us omnivores who obviously had meat sporadically and veggies and fruits more often.

Y'know what Dian Vreeland said about lettuce...

"I ADORE Lettuce!.... I'm just not sure it's food." I'm sure she'd go for these outfits.

18. Strident and/or stupid tactics never work to further one's philosophy.
I first became a vegetarian at age 16 in 1971. I fell off the wagon in 73 (talked out of it by doctors and other well-meaning adults) but came back into the fold by '77 and have never (intentionally) eaten meat since then. I have been that strident zealot, that person who nags someone whose dinner includes dead animals and years of experience have shown me that none of this stuff works. No one likes being preached to, whether its to do with religion or the food they eat. No matter how noble your intentions (and I have my doubts about PETA) you're not going to get many converts. People have already stopped listening and pigeon-holed you into the crazy file before you even open your mouth.

Now...if my friends and acquaintances really want to know the bennies of a veg diet, I'm happy to be a living example. I'm 55 years old, very high-energy, very athletic and I'm looking at a quality of aging where I will never give a RED CENT to Big Pharma. I made it thru menopause with no fake hormones, my blood pressure and cholesterol levels are really low, and nothing hurts. I still do a very physical job that requires me to be on my feet all day (I do have the varicose veins to show for it!) and I don't look 30 or anything, but physically I feel amazing.

I'm happy as can be that America is pushing through a better health care system. I also intend to NEVER take advantage of it!

Because I know that when I decide to restrict my diet based on health and/or ethical reasons, it's because nameless young women are posing nude or semi-nude while holding signs about tasting better.

Last time I checked into this (using google image search to find examples of 'naked PETA') unclothed men accounted for about 40% of the different examples I found. So basically, yes.

Not a PETA member, vegetarian or media analyst.

This same author made the same anti-vegetarian argument better (and much, much more honestly) in his earlier article, "Why Christians Cannot Support Animal Rights."

So why bother asking nutritionists or doctors for advice on a vegetarian diet when we can ask a tutor at an e-learning divinity school instead?

I live in a town filled with cliques of vegans and vegetarians. Many people move in and then out of those cliques once they make "decisions" that don't fit the dogma. A lot of it is social separation, of the kind we all went through in high school.

Heck, one can see some very insincere, drama-based anger toward this end on this very board.

61. So no examples, then? It must be a very rare phenomenon!
Or perhaps one shouldn't extrapolate mens rea from the behavioral characteristics of a small sub-set of a larger population.

For example, some Democrats act like utter and complete assholes to others solely because of their dietary choices, but I would never think to make the argument that all Democrats are assholes.

78. Their "cause" is all about banning animal domestication.
It's not that they have been "taken over" by any group; they've always been this crazy.

85. You're wrong. As you were the last thousand times you've posted this.
But run along and don't bother to post any evidence for your claims, as usual.

88. If I posted "the secret agenda" of any other group without a shred of support...
It'd be deleted so fast it'd make your head spin.

But for some reason, The Protocols of the Elders of PETA is kosher. Who knew?

54. Good for them. Sometimes it takes a wild act to get past the ubiquitous meat ads...
Edited on Tue Mar-23-10 06:09 PM by JanMichael
...like Taco bell, Wendy's, McDonald's, Burger King, Hardees, Arby's, Zaxby's, etcerabees. Just count the ads in a 24 hour period in any part of this land.

Those companies, and meat companies like the one owned by that turd repuke in Georgia (Tyson?), spend an unimaginable amount of money to convince people practically from early childhood (Happy Meal?) that meat is splendiforious just don't mind the production values and treatment of animals. Enjoy just ignore the process that brought that juicy meat to you mouth. It isn't your concern.

Why shouldn't a group that is totally outspent from time forgotten not try some shock tactics?

I love it.

70. When the 'Broccoli Brigade' marches...
some of us 'bite' their 'heads' off.

We exist as survivors because our ancestors ate meat, anything else that walked, crawled, flew, or squirmed. The BBC'ers tend to forget this.

In a perfect world, which it ain't, maybe their path to rightousnous would work.

Be interesting to see some stats from the BB showing life/death estimates...I'm sure PETA has some available.

Early arrivals on this continent used to spend days hunting the Woolly Mammoths so that they could have a month-long BBQ.

83. I find PETA's exploitation of women disgusting.
As a vegan, I regret that they seem to represent the face of veganism and animal rights to the public (especially since I'd argue that they are far from an animal right organization).

But I also don't buy the insincere outrage on the part of the concern trolls in this thread. No one here gives a shit about exploitation of women, they just like to poke vegans.

91. stick to the salad bras, but I saw some awsome anti-meat protestors in London
Edited on Wed Mar-24-10 01:15 AM by Sen. Walter Sobchak
I was in a fancy restaurant in London when anti-meat protesters "raided" the dining room, screaming into bullhorns, knocking over tables and what-not. They were squirting some brown stuff I believe to have been chocolate milk syrup.

Almost in unison a large number of the men in the restaurant got up from their tables, along with guys from the kitchen and began beating the shit out of the protesters and pushing them back to the street, one of the protesters was filming the mayhem when a guy who looked like he should be in a Windsor family portrait grabbed the camcorder and smashed it over the protesters head repeatedly. Everyone then returned to their table and resumed their meal like nothing happened.

It was the coolest thing I have ever seen,

It is like every British male has a soccer hooligan inside who can swing into action at any moment,
