Does anybody know anything about tax credits for furnaces
the energy efficient ones that have the credit? If you're retired and have no tax liability are you still able to get a credit on your taxes?

1. Generally credits are taken after you calculate the money you owe - so
it acts like writing a check for that amount. If it's more than what you owe, and there's no specific limit on the program, then you would get a refund check.

You should start with your State Energy office to find out what is available, this is where the "cash for appliances" program is being handled.

Probably the best resource is at the DSIRE - Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency

3. I think the tax credit is a federal tax credit because of the
energy efficiency. Guess I'll just have to see what I can find out.

7. The Federal portion of the stimulus bill was dispursed/administered
by the States. Here in NC, the State used it to provide a sales tax free holiday period along with some other programs. But there were a number of ways that each state was able to use the program, I think mostly because the local climate controls what products/strategies are most energy efficient.

4. Apparently you can't get back more than you owe...so it's
not doing us a whit of good except we'd be getting a new furnace.

5. We just bought a wood burning stove that carried a $1,500 credit because of its efficiency
Jotul, 600, and its just a wood burning stove that is very efficient (and heavy) but it qualified for $1,500 credit.

6. The 30% energy efficiency tax credit is "fully refundable"
Edited on Mon Mar-22-10 02:35 PM by Statistical
"fully refundable" is IRS lingo for you get the full amount regardless of your tax liability.
You owe $0.00 + $1,500 credit = you get $1,500 check.

On Edit: I was 100% mistaken. Sorry.
Looks like it is "non-refundable" which means max claim is tax liability.

Not to get into your business but your tax liability is $0.00?

Even is so check your state/local govt and your utility. Many will offer incentives for energy efficiency appliances. My natural gas company offers $500 towards new tankless hot water heater for example.

8. Go to aceee.org website. They are advocates for energy efficiency
and have a lot of information there. (they helped write some of the legislation).
