Stewart Udall was also responsible for integrating the Washington Redskins.
We know he was JFK's Secretary of the Interior, but how many know that in that capacity he noted that D.C. Stadium (now RFK stadium), the home field of the team, was built on federal land? He informed George Preston Marshall, the owner of the Redskins, that his refusal to employ African-American players was a violation of federal law, and unless Marshall remedied the situation, his lease would be revoked. The bitter old racist had no choice but to acquiesce.
RIP Mr. Udall, you were a good man.
