Union President: At least 62 DFAS workers to be fired for bad credit ratings
Source: WKYC - Cleveland

He claims at least 62 workers have received letters, telling them they are losing their security clearance because of credit problems. And that means they will lose their jobs.

Marshall claims he now owes about $6,000 on credit card and medical bills for he and Sheba, his teenage sweetheart who became his wife.

Marshall has a defibrillator and diabetes. His wife has leukemia and needs costly treatments.

...

Sheba is about to lose her job at Kent State University. Their health care coverage will disappear sometime in April.

1. That's not unusual
Those with security clearances and debt problems (Among other problems as well) are considered high breach risks. Right or wrong it's been that way for a very long time.

4. I wonder was a good credit history ever a requirement prior to employment?

6. No shit!
Absent criminal history, isn't this like charging a person with a crime before it happens?

3. $6,000? That's All?
I'm just coming off $60,000 on cards. I bought a foreclosure that wouldn't allow a regular mortgage, and had to wait 12 months for proper financing. Will have no more consumer debt in a few weeks, but in the mean time, I know what it does to your credit rating.

I understand that people in dire financial straits can be credit risks, but you have to look at more than a FICO score. Only $6,000?

5. Hopefully DFAS is applying better information technology
About 10 years ago DFAS had an extraordinarily inefficient combination of partly manual, partly automated processes. They shold be able to reduce the employees by at least half.
