Lunar Rover Is Spotted For First Time In 37 Years

Richard Garriott has many accomplishments to his name — he's a successful video game developer and one of fewer than 10 private citizens to travel into space. Now he even owns property on the moon.

"I am the world’s only private owner of an object on a celestial body," he says.

The object he's referring to is the Lunokhod 2 rover. The Lunokhod 2 is a Russian space vehicle that landed on the moon in 1973 — and stopped working that same year. Even though no one knew exactly where the rover was, it went up for sale at a 1993 Sotheby’s auction in New York, and Garriott handed over $68,500 for it.

Last Monday, scientists spotted the Lunokhod 2 rover for the first time in 37 years.

"As soon as I saw this new data, I did a recheck of the findings, and there’s no question that they have the right target. It's my Lunokhod 2," Garriott says.

1. Perhaps that is his Lunokhod 2
Or, more likely, it's simply God telling him he has too much money.

3. I actually loathe people like this
Rich, vain people always rub me the wrong way. This guy literally just threw 68k into a fire. I know personally that 68k donated to our local homeless shelter would be able to provide for dozens of people and families struggling to stay alive.

7. It's his to do with what he chooses
no doubt. And I certainly don't know anything about how much he has donated and to what causes, but yeah, there is a greater good that could be done with this. I guess it beats shoving it up his nose like so many new rich do.

11. Spending this kind of money on frivolous things isn't so bad as spending it on destructive things.
The vast majority of things people buy are frivolous, and many things are harmful to others and the earth's environment.

Rush Limbaugh has probably spent more than that for sex with underage prostitutes in the Dominican Republic.

And certainly, many people have spent more than that on gems and gold mined by slaves and traded by violent criminals.

Spending money on a lost spacecraft is sort of cool. I also wouldn't be surprised if he donates similar amounts of money to good charities.

12. Maybe he knows the truth and that "inoperative lunar rover" was only a cover story
The real purpose behind the Soviets is far more nefarious...
