Dolly Parton takes on Repub. senator over refusal to regulate payday loan industry
Go, Dolly!

http://www.theboot.com/2010/03/23/dolly-parton-bob-corker/?icid=main|htmlws-main-n|dl2|link5|http%3A%2F%2Fwww.theboot.com%2F2010%2F03%2F23%2Fdolly-parton-bob-corker%2F

"... Dolly took Senator Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) to task over his refusal to regulate the nation's payday loan industry, which charges a whopping 400 percent interest rate to military families and unemployed workers for short-term loans when they're short of cash.

"Dolly chided Corker for alleged 'behind closed door' efforts to allow the high interest rates to continue.

" 'For a dad and a mom trying to raise some kids on a military paycheck, a 400 percent interest rate is not just dumb, it's un-American,' said the superstar, adding that the U.S. Senate is currently looking at reducing the maximum rate charged for payday loans from 400 percent to 36 percent.

" 'Growing up poor, I know the hardship and tragedy that money matters can cause to a family,' she added. ..."

99. Dolly is completely ignorant on this subject
and knows nothing about finance. Cheering her on this subject is akin to cheering Jenny McCarthy on the subject of vaccinations. Payday loan companies suffer severe bad debt. The companies that I've studied have bad debt ranging from 20-30% of total fee revenue. Also, payday loan companies typcially return 9% above the weighted average cost of capital... hardly excessive.

4. Ball's in your court, Sen. Corker
I suggest forfeiting. Because if you think you can beat Dolly Parton in Tennessee, then you're even dumber than my default setting for Republicans, and that's pretty damn dumb.

70. Check out the song list from her 2005 album:
"Those Were the Days" (with Mary Hopkin)
"Blowin' in the Wind" (with Nickel Creek)
"Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" (with Norah Jones, Lee Ann Womack)
"The Twelfth of Never" (Duet with Keith Urban)
"Where Do the Children Play?" (with Yusuf Islam)
"Me and Bobby McGee" (with Kris Kristofferson)
"Crimson and Clover" (with Tommy James)
"The Cruel War" (with Alison Krauss, Dan Tyminski, Mindy Smith)
"Turn, Turn, Turn" (with Roger McGuinn)
"If I Were a Carpenter" (Duet with Joe Nichols)
"Both Sides Now" (with Rhonda Vincent, Judy Collins)
"Imagine" (with David Foster)

I LOVE DOLLY PARTON!
If the duet with Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens), done at the peak of the war craze, doesn't get to you, nothing will.

34. Sadly, the junior senator from Tennessee is probably no more un-American than any of his
Republican colleagues in either house of the Congress. That said, in addition to being un-American, Corker's being so beholden to the nauseatingly un-American pay-day loan industry speaks volumes imho about his general character and who he serves rather than the people of Tennessee by promoting the welfare of this hideous (400% interest is hideous and much more) industry rather than the general welfare. :-)

47. What 400% looks like
I loan you $100 and two weeks later you give me back $115.

That doesn't look too bad. But it's 400% annual interest. Big numbers are scary.

No short-term loan company can make money on 36%.

That would be I loan you $100 and two weeks later you give me back $101.30.

It costs more than that to pay the clerk to make the transaction.

What to clamp down is allowing people to roll-over the amount, which is how they start sinking deeper, making it a long-term high-interest loan instead of money to tide them over to pay day.

Nobody is twisting arms here. They tell you the terms. But they should not allow roll overs like you said. 15 dollars for 2 weeks can save you over draft fees that are worse yet. Day after day fee after fee. I know this all too well.

Dolly Parton - True Patriot, has lived through tough times and also succeeded in the best of American ways.

Bob Corker - Faux P*tri*t, will gladly suck the marrow from the bones of poor and middle class Americans who are actively serving our country, while loudly proclaiming his "Support for Our Troops*"

* -Offer of support not valid when there is a quick buck to be made by Corker & Cronies, a contractor eligible for a no-bid deal, a fake war to gin-up, a union to be busted, or anything else that Corker decides is in his best interest.

67. Remember what your character in "9 to 5" did to Dabney Coleman?
Please do that to Bob Corker too.

69. Dolly Parton is one of this planet's most wonderful and talented
people. Check out this video, where she was a surprise guest at a Chris Thile show, i.e. 2 of the most talented people on earth together:

one of the last remaining Republicans with any principles.

85. What makes you say that. She has supported local Democrats for decades
and in interviews calls herself independent

90. No she's not.
True - she hails from one of the MOST Republican counties in the state, but she hasn't been a Republican since my family has known her (she and my Mom grew up together).

She's always been an Independent-left, Democratic voter.

76. When I was younger, I used to dress up as Dolly for Halloween every year!
Of course, I'd go into the ladies' restrooms at clubs and find other Dollys ... who were clearly male under those boobs.

I dressed as her because I just loved her whole attitude ... what you see is what you get.

And what we get is always fabulous. Her rags-to-riches (and artistry and philanthropy and job creation, etc.) story can't be beat.

When I fantasize about my dream dinner party of celebrities, Dolly would definitely be the first person at my table.

77. Good for her
Growing up poor in the sticks like she did, I bet she got to see a lot of poor people hoodwinked out of what little they had by grifters of all sorts. My Dad grew up dirt poor in south Mississippi and he had a lot of stories about the predatory scumbags that preyed on desperate people.

83. Bravo Dolly!
Dolly is a GREAT ambassador for the US.

Her favooutite line is that "it takes a lot of money to look this cheap" but she is one classy woman, who appears to use her wealth for the good of others.

She has a new album/DVD out by the way "Live from London" which captures the energy of her show perfectly:

http://www.amazon.com/Live-London-DVD-Dolly-Parton/dp/B002RBNOAI

I went to see her in Cardiff with my Dad on the same tour, and we had a blast. It was the first time I'd ever heard a sound engineer get get a good sound at the Cardiff Arena (normally sounds like the inside of an aircraft hangar) - The people around her are obviously as professional as she is.

84. I love Dolly.
I used to get to interview her when I was working as a reporter in Sevier County.

She was always so gracious.

Corker? Meh. I have no use for that pissant. Y'all remember his campaign email/websites were run on the same server from the company in Chattanooga - Coptix, which is now Medium - that allegedly lost Rove's emails, don'cha?

94. Thank you Dolly, for exposing the conservative reptile brain!
This is precisely why the right wraps itseelf in the flag and thumps their Bibles (Old Testament facing up). The empty symbolic gestures are intended to mask the fact that there's not a shred of humanity present.
