I just want something to protect and take care of our son...
Husband and I are vets. Our health care is taken care of. Because of our low income we qualify for free VA care. Still leaves our son out in the cold. The income is just above the levels needed to qualify for Tenncare. We fall into the gap where we make a tad too much.

Hell, the school sent him home because he had a rash on his face and wouldn't allow him to return until we had a doctor's note. Then it took over two hours to find a doctor's office who would be willing to see him. One office said that we should take him to the ER to get the rash looked at.

Crazy, I know.

So, every day we hope he doesn't get hurt or become ill...at least until I finish college and can get a decent job.

From what I've read, this bill gives him what he needs. It's not perfect...nothing rarely is, but it will help our son.

Just my two cents about HCR.

1. so why isn't he on an schip program?
If you're low income you should qualify for it, regardless of this bill.

2. The state of TN said we would have to pay $239 per month...
because of our income. That's been a while ago when we first lost our insurance and I haven't tried reapplying since then. The waiting period for that is 3 months of doing without insurance. I was thinking of making another go at either this or TennCare (which is Medicaid) when the new changes start. We think it will be a lot easier and more affordable.

3. WOW -- that high??
That's insane. Our schip is a tenth of that cost. In Georgia. Try the TennCare, you hopefully will have better luck with that.

That's an obscene amount for schip.

10. Rather disingenous of you to pretend concern for someone who WILL
benefit from this law when you have worked so hard already to encourage repeal of it and stir up animosity against those of us who support it, don't you think??

I mean, let's be honest here - you say since 23 million will still not have access to medical care that no one should, so you should be telling her that her kid should just suck it up until all 23 million get theirs......

4. Isn't there some family coverage available for vets ?
Tricare ? Or is that just for active duty ?

Are there any free clinics in your area ?

5. There is nothing for him in the VA and we don't have free clinics...
When he had his facial rash and we searched for a doctor, we did finally find one and for the time being they said they would work with us until we can get insurance. Doesn't do much if he gets hurt or becomes ill, but it's something.

6. I'm glad you found a doc that will work with you. I hope you
can get your son coverage soon. I wish we had Single Payor Universal Coverage/Medicare for All.
No one should have to go without healthcare in this country. This patchwork system we have is being perpetuated.

It looks like it has higher income limitations than TennCare does.
Also appears that if income for family of 3 is less than $45,000 there is no premium.

9. We did a while ago and were told that we would have to pay a high premium at the time...
and still wait three months to apply. According to your number we should be able to get it with no problem without the premium. What the hell?

I'm calling them tomorrow after class and finding out what the deal is.

12. Go for it !
There does seem to be a requirement that the child be without insurance for 3 months.

The benefits and the application are on the website
