Folks, I hate to go here but,
Due to the call by the militia leader to break windows, I would say this is a good time to mull over whether you want Obama type stickers on your car. Even maybe clothing. As for myself, I havent put any identifying marks anywhere. I can see property damage being the next step. I would hate to see the innocent hurt. Am I worried for nothing?

90. I'm pretty sure mine has to go.
I live in a very rural part of Virginia, and we are lousy with tea-bagger types. To tell you how red the area is, I need only let you know that there is a mock-crucifixion on the 'main' road this weekend. The road is also lined with signs telling non-believers that "You're going to hell if you don't repent" and other lovely sentiments.

I would love to keep my sticker, but we only have one car for the two of us - and actually one real job between the two of us. We cannot afford to have the windows or anything else fixed right now.

11. Starting to look a lot like Memphis in 1968 to me
Media mostly reported on the rioting of African Americans after the murder of King but the Birchers and Klans types were out in force and the police dept was largely on their side. My family did not back down then and I won't back down now. Would have been nice, if we had to endure this again, to have had a bill I felt was more of a help to us. Now, we're placed in the position of defending a right of center capitalist slant cause it's not as right wing as the bat shit crazy party.

21. Depends on where you live...
I stopped putting anything promotional on (or visibly IN) my car long ago after my tires were slashed by an opposing fan of college football (after seeing a spare tire cover with my own team's logo). So, this kind of asinine behavior is not only political in motivation. But, that is why I use car magnets--easy to take off if I have to go into "deep red" territory.

They pretty much hit the Obama sticker dead center. I'm guessing high-powered pellet gun, possibly a .22. Put a piece of plastic up to cover the 1/3 of the window missing...the mangled bumper sticker s still attached to a shard of the glass that hasn't fallen out yet.

We do not have any stickers on the new car...we can't afford to replace any windows.

The more this stuff gets publicized the more people get distgusted.Enough people get sick and tired of their antics the more people start turning against them.Sooner or later there will be such an outrage that the goverment will be forced to take legal action.

32. A compromise
What I do with political bumper stickers (all bumper stickers actually) is go to a sign store and have them cut up a piece of their magnetic sign material into bumper sticker size. The sticker goes on the magnet which goes on the car. That way, when I park in public, my car is not a sitting target, and I don't drive down the re-sale value of my vehicle.

My profession requires me to be politically anonymous; I can't "proselytize" my politics to my students.

I probably prefer to be anonymous, anyway. That way I can choose whether or not to join political discussions, instead of inviting everyone who looks at me or my car to tell me what they think.

Ha! Figures! Plus, you probably live among the right wing. Around here, on election night, there was dancing in the streets, fireworks, and people passing out cookies. Where you are, I'm sure it is hyper dangerous, and you should probably put a Palin sticker on your car just to be super duper safe.

66. Had a guy spit at me and my car today with it's Obama sticker
Was waiting to make a left and the guy pulls up in his truck next to my Beetle to make a right. Takes a long slow look at me and my car, spits directly at me. Then pulls out into the road. Checked the back of his truck as he drove away and it was covered in Rethug stickers ("Pregnant? Need help?", NRA, McCain/Palin etc. etc.

Now it's possible he was just tobacco spitting right at that exact moment (this is farm country)...

...but I will say I was a tad bit unnerved. That long look was absolutely zeroed in on me.

Be careful out there everybody.

Ditto for yard signs at election time. I am surrounded by these lunatics. I put NOTHING past them.

I also don't care much for advertising my beliefs about anything on the bumper of my car.

72. Not for nothing
A few days after the election, a car pulled up along my car and yelled "fuck you". I had no idea why they said this until my 79 year old mother said "take the Obama sticker of your car". In the car were a group of 3 white kids about 20 years old, yelling at a 50 year old white woman and her mother. I realized the ugliness then and it has done nothing but escalated.

74. It may be worse in "safely democratic" areas
I live in a pretty strong liberal community (Eugene, Oregon) but in many ways, that just makes the wingnuts that are here feel more isolated, powerless, and dangerous. I don't fear mobs, there aren't enough of them here, but there are certainly enough skulking cowards willing to lash out and destroy property when they think they can get away with it.

76. Batshit nuts is not limited to any one political party.
Anything you might do to offer your opinion to the world at large could potentially open you up for attack. Gay supportive or gay hating--either way--somebody might go off the deep end. Pro or anti choice, pro or anti universal health care, pro or anti ANYTHING is gonna piss somebody off somewhere along the line. You just have to realize it is part of the landscape and decide if political activism is worth it to you personally.

I chose to live my life out front and unafraid to stand for my beliefs--knowing full well that one day somebody is gonna get in my face in some way (and it has already happened more than once...) YMMV, and I respect you however you choose to go.

Prudent behavior should always be considered, regardless of whether one confuses fear with actual prudence.

I imagine it rests on a most personal level though-- depending on many factors. My bumper-stickers stay in place, however I have suggested to my mother that she remove hers due to the circumstances of her place of residence.

I don't put political statements on my car or person, because I'm a public school teacher. It's part of my job to keep my personal politics private.

If I did, I probably would have been fired in response to community outrage, since I teach in a hard-core rural, conservative area. That would probably please some DUers who think firing teachers is a great thing, but I wouldn't like it much, lol.

I'm a private person, anyway. It's hardwired into me not to offer opinions unless asked, and I value the same from others. And, I wouldn't have Obama stickers or cups or hats or shirts, because I'm not a fan. Again, I'm a teacher.

Still, I don't think it's okay to degrade the environment in any community by letting gangs intimidate the rest of the residents. If I want to put something on my person when I'm not at work, I will.

Edited to add:

I am also notoriously obstinate. Given the incident with the SUV and the 10 yo posted here earlier today, if I let my impulses have free reign, I'm likely to find something really in your face about socialism and wear it prominently on all those errands I'm getting ready to run. I don't like intimidation.

It's probably a good thing that I'm old enough to have learned to reign in those impulses. :D

93. My car was vandalized by a right winger.
After voting I left the local courthouse and started walking toward my car. It was in the far reaches of the parking lot. I noticed a guy making a motion by my car but he was too far away to see what he was doing. The guy then dashed away, got into a pickup truck and drove out the back of the parking lot. When I got close enough to my car I saw a long scratch on my car right where I saw that man. It was too late to get the license number of his truck. It cost almost $1,000 to repaint the back of my car because the scratch went across three panels on the car. As soon as I got home I removed all of my Obama stickers from my cars and took away the yard sign I had in front of my house.

Right wingers always seem to resort to violence or destruction. They hate diplomacy and believe force and killing are the only way to solve problems. I urge everyone to remove all signs displaying your political loyalty or else you could end up with more than just a scratched car.

A side story: I have a person in my distant family who is a right wing Christian. He listens to Glenn Beck faithfully and believes everything he hears without question. Recently, this guy wrote on his Facebook page he was wanting to buy a pistol and then get a concealed carry permit. Frankly, I am terrified of this guy. He is not only a religious fanatic, but also a right wing fanatic. The people who are addicted to the hatred from right wing radio and Fox News are like cult members. There is no way to communicate with them. I believe the right wing extremist in my family is a danger to others, but what can be done? Anyone can get a gun and I truly feel this guy is going to kill someone. He is a classic fanatic. BTW, this (fake) Christian also didn't even have health insurance for his wife and three little children and he was advertising that he wanted to buy a $500 gun. And he talks about 'personal responsibility'. His daughter ended up in intensive care for almost a month after she was born and he didn't pay a dime of the bill. He is not only a classic fanatic, but a classic hypocrite as well.

99. the answer is
put a crowbar in your back seat. When some neanderthal comes at you, show him the crowbar. Or if you are squeamish, use pepper spray-- a very 'defensive' weapon.

These rethug cowards want a fight, give them one. Don't cower, kick their stupid asses.
Dont ever be cowed by violence. Just make damn sure you win. When someone threatens violence against you, especially when that person is a blowhard coward--the only real answer is to threaten back. Law of the jungle, and we are very much jungle creatures, much as we'd like to pretend we aren't.
If you dont stop them when they use aggression, you will be a victim or someone else will.

I would say make sure to run if they have a gun and you have a crowbar, but I'm sure you already know this.

I had one incident over stickers. Good ole boy in a pick-up pulled in front of me slammed on the brakes and approached me with typical rep frothing at the mouth bs. I guess it didn't occur to him that a woman driving alone would have a buck knife neatly tucked in the pocket of the driver's side door. I showed it to him and explained that he should get back in his truck and drive way. I still have that knife. I will effing cut someone.

On a serious note, no, I don't think you are worried for nothing.

It is something to reflect upon - the tea baggers need serious push back, and this isn't time to be faint of heart about it. However, each person has his/her comfort level about how much insult or violence from the other side that they wish to let into their lives. I understand those that would prefer to go a bit incognito while they engage in other forms of pushback that are less likely to make them targets of random, misplaced violence.

I am searching for a good balance on this myself. So far, while I won't engage in direct debate anymore with any tea bagger type whom I suspect is unstable, I won't quit wearing my Obama gear in public.
