North Korean Gov't Apologizes for Head Tax on South Korean Immigrants.
Edited on Tue May-01-07 07:08 PM by Boojatta
From 1960 to 2006, the North Korean government imposed a head tax of $500 on every immigrant from South Korea. Recently, that head tax was revoked. Now, the North Korean government has gone a step further and issued an official apology to those North Korean citizens who originate from South Korea.

However, the apology was blemished with some rude comments to the effect that the government of North Korea is in a better position to spend money wisely than some "lunatic" who prefers living in North Korea to living in South Korea.

Not only does that comment insult a large number of patriotic North Korean citizens, but it also suggests that immigrants from South Korea made a bad decision. Ultimately, the result can only be a reduction in immigration from South Korea to North Korea. That could have serious consequences when demographics start to change in North Korea and there is a large retired population in North Korea that needs young South Korean taxpayers to help support them in their old age.

Surely it behooves us all to just get along and stop insulting each other. Surely the government of North Korea should understand and respect the decision of South Koreans who choose to pursue the greater opportunities for intense social interaction that are available in North Korea.

1. Why the fuck would anyone immigrate to North Korea?

Seriously? I'm kinda confused...I would assume those with families on the other side would try to get those out of N Korea.

N Korea is so bad people escape from there to China.

But I'm guessing this applies more to those who got stuck in N Korea after the Korean war...
