“You’re dead; we know where you live; we’ll get you.”
Stupak receives death threats after voting for health reform.
As ThinkProgress has chronicled, the passage of health care reform has resulted in a series of vandalism incidents and threats aimed at lawmakers who voted for the bill. Vandals have struck the Tuscon office of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ), the Monroe County Democratic Committee headquarters in upstate New York, Rep. Louise Slaughter’s (D-NY) Niagara Falls office, the Knox County Democratic headquarters in Ohio, and the Sedgwick County Democratic Party headquarters in Wichita, KS. Now, Politico reports that Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI), an anti-abortion Democrat who held out his support for the legislation until Sunday, has received phone calls threatening his life:

Stupak, the Michigan Democrat whose last-minute compromise on abortion guaranteed passage of the bill Sunday, said callers have left messages for him saying, “You’re dead; we know where you live; we’ll get you.”

“My wife still can’t answer the phone,” Stupak told POLITICO Tuesday. The messages are “full of obscenities if she leaves it plugged in. In my office, we can’t get a phone out. It’s just bombarded.”

Stupak, a former police officer, said he’s not fazed by the threats or by the prospect of protests at his district office this weekend. “I’ve looked down barrels of guns,” he said. “I’ve talked my way out of it.”

Politico also reports that “Rep. Dennis Cardoza, a Blue Dog Democrat from California, said he’s gotten physical threats over health care reform.” “There are some folks that identified themselves as being members of the tea party called, my staff has gotten to know their names over time, and they have been very loud and very ugly,” Cardoza said. Additionally, the Capitol Hill newspaper notes that “Rep. Earl Pomeroy (D-ND) said he had to change his personal cell phone number after a Republican gave it out to health care opponents.” The chairman of the North Dakota Republican Party read Pomeroy’s cell phone number aloud on the stage of the North Dakota Republican convention.

Update Politico reports that "Law enforcement authorities are investigating an incident that occurred at the Virginia home of Rep. Tom Perriello’s (D-Va.) brother, whose address was publicized by tea party activists angry at the congressman’s vote for the health care bill." Law enforcement officials did not tell Politico any details of the incident, which appears to have occurred after "Mike Troxel, an organizer for the Lynchburg Tea Party, posted on his blog what he thought was the congressman’s address, encouraging tea party activists to 'drop by.'"

7. Stupak was a police officer. He has also faced some tragedy in his life, his son committed suicide
at the age of 17.

I don't like his views on abortion at all but he did vote for the bill and his family being threatened...it just sickens me.

shown to have some depressive thoughts on it. My husband was once on it ten years ago when he was 24 and I did see that same thing but it wasn't to the extreme. http://www.house.gov/stupak/accutane_statement.shtml

These people are crazy and will go after anyone that does not fit their agenda to "t". They will go after Repubs if any speak out against them. They are dangerous.

9. This is getting very scary, indeed.
I hope these fuckers are arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law - SOON.
I'm no huge fan of this bill, but what. the. fuck. Who does this shit over a HEALTH CARE BILL???? Jesus Christ - threatening calls, bricks through windows, gas lines severed - it's insanity. I remember the days when we were called treasonous traitors for just making fun of shrub 'AT A TIME OF WAR'.

I live in a very red hillbilly area, and I'm seriously considering removing my Obama bumper sticker. I hate to do it, but we only have one car between us, and cannot afford to replace a window should some hillbilly decide to break it after listening to Limpballs at lunch.

:grr:

21. I live in Oklahoma and my husband wants...
me to take my "Boycott Veal" sticker off the car. He says even that pegs me as a "looney Liberal" in the eyes of idiot conservatives.

He's probably right, but anyone who wants to throw a brick through my car window can fuck themselves with a rusty pike.

12. Dear Mr. Stupak
The threats you're receiving? They're from your "pro-life" friends, allies and colleagues. The folks who idolize the likes of Shelly Shannon, Eric Rudolph and Scott Roeder. They're not the type to let you talk once they point the gun or the rifle at you. If you could ask Dr. Tiller how much time he had to talk with Scott Roeder before Roeder gunned him down in the nave of his church, you'll find out it wasn't much.

And for what? Can you, with a straight face, honestly say that the health care bill directly allocates federal funds for abortion? No, because you have to stovepipe it about six different ways to pretend that a woman spending her own money for a supplemental rider to her insurance policy to cover abortion is somehow paid for out of federal funds. You took an absurd position, caused nitwits and nutjobs to buy into it, and now the frustrated, violent people you stirred up have turned on you. I'm sure it sucks. But if you can't help feeling that you've brought at least a little of this grief on yourself, I can't say I'm inclined to disagree with you.

13. All great points...
none of these people who are making the threats or doing vandalism are pro-choice, that's for damn sure. Time to for him to face some facts--his family's safety is at stake.

14. A sad state of affairs
This is what happens when people like this are appeased over and over. they just get bolder and more demanding. Where we find ourselves as a nation has been coming for 30 years, ever since 1980, and especially since 1988(?) when the fairness doctrine was done away with.

By now they have been convinced not that they have a different opinion and that it is the right opinion, but that they are the only true Americans and that everybody that differs from them is an enemy of their country. They are constantly being fueled and whipped into a frenzy by the likes of Beck, Limbaugh, Palin et al and they are hysterical. They cannot stand it that their idea of the "American Way" has been defied, by a black man no less.

Now, the 64 dollar question. Will we see another event like the OKC bombing? Is their another McVeigh in their midst that's crazy enough to actually do it? I don't know, I certainly hope not. I hope they will just die off and go away.

16. With the right wing haters in talk radio firing up their audiences, this can only lead to trouble

With all the knuckle dragging rednecks listening to people like Beck and Savage, it is only a matter of time until they push some lunatic over the edge. Then we will be reading news reports about some Tbagger on a tower taking shots with a deer rifle
