Holy Moly. Rising Seas Swallow Disputed Island.
:wow:

Rising Seas Swallow Up Disputed Island
India, Bangladesh Each Claimed New Moore

AP: NEW DELHI - For nearly 30 years, India and Bangladesh have argued over control of a tiny rock island in the Bay of Bengal.
Now rising sea levels have resolved the dispute for them: the island's gone.

New Moore Island in the Sunderbans has been completely submerged, said oceanographer Sugata Hazra, a professor at Jadavpur University
in Calcutta. Its disappearance has been confirmed by satellite imagery and sea patrols, he said.

"What these two countries could not achieve from years of talking, has been resolved by global warming," said Hazra.

Scientists at the School of Oceanographic Studies at the university have noted an alarming increase in the rate at which sea levels
have risen over the past decade in the Bay of Bengal.

1. The atolls of the South Pacific are sinking too, and those are inhabited. A culture is dying there.
What will it take?

3. Do people get it yet?
All our problems with each other won't count for shit once we're all living underwater.

9. For Then...
I want to die young at the end of the day On the High Sea, with face to the sky, When agony is but a dream far away And the flight of my soul is a bird soaring by.

Let there be no sad tears as I draw my last breath, at one and alone with the sky and the sea, No sobbing, nor prayer, nor laments of death; I only would hear the deep waves cover me.

To die when the bright glow of twilight is fading, And catches the waves in its last net of light; To be like that sun as its luminous shading Expires and is lost in the arms of the night.

To die, and die young: before time has destroyed The delicate fabric illusion has spun; When life can still say:"I am yours," but the void Of a final echo tells us death has won!

13. Well, technically, we trumped Mother Nature on this one
If we hadn't caused global warming, Mother Nature would likely still have her island.

8. There's another one missing off Mexico
and the Mexicans are understandably unhappy about it because it extended their sea boundary out about 55 miles and kept international drillers away from that part of the Caribbean.

Unfortunately, their wooheads are saying the US military sank it, not that the ocean just rose over it. It wasn't much more than a sand bar to begin with, now it's gone.

It's stuck out in the middle of the summer hurricane track and it's sinking.

16. After 8 years of Bushco
I can see why the Mexicans would think we sunk it on purpose. It will take a long long time to rebuild trust with anyone. sigh

Some won't get it until their house is under water.

24. not because of sea level rise
my parental units live there and have for over 20 years. There are sea walls where you can observe very little if any sea level rise. The kind poster below that provided a sea level rise link still shows only about a 33mm rise in ocean depths over a 10 year period and surely that cannot account for the loss of an island. The picture in the OP would indicate several FEET of rise...

26. thanks...but that picture from the article in the OP
would indicate FEET of rise...and recent since the plants are still holding their leaves. to sink an island should take more than a centimeter of rise...
