Breaking News: George W. Bush is still an asshole
from the Nation:

The Purell Will Always Be With Us
posted by Leslie Savan on 03/24/2010 @ 10:13pm

Studies at Cornell have shown that conservatives are more easily disgusted than liberals, and if ever there was an emblem of Republican disgust for the poor, the sick, and people of color, this has gotta be it:

Watch: http://www.thenation.com/blogs/notion/545041/the_purell_will_always_be_with_us

Yes, that's George W. Bush and Bill Clinton in Port-au-Prince this week, shaking hands with Haitians, and Bush then wiping his hand on Clinton's shirt. It's hard to catch because it flicks by on screen so fast, but 43 then checks to be sure any cooties that may have migrated to his person have made the complete transfer to 42's right shoulder.

This may be the first time Bush has used a fellow former president as a towel, but it's not the first time he's done something like this in public: http://www.thenation.com/blogs/notion/545041/the_purell_will_always_be_with_us

The prodigal son's concern about germ-infested humanity was noted by none other than then-Senator Barack Obama in his book, The Audacity of Hope, where he recalled President Bush, after warmly shaking the junior Illinois senator's hand at their first meeting, turning to an aide for a squirt of hand sanitizer. "Good stuff," Bush helpfully told Obama, offering a dollop of anti-bacterial goo as a well-intended professional tip. Of course, lots of thoroughly modern pols credit sanitizers with fighting off colds and worse, though they usually acknowledge this only behind the scenes (it's bad form to be visibly repelled by your constituents). .........(more)

2. I Thought It Was Worse Than That
The Left does itself a disservice when it seeks to make a major deal out of every. little. POSSIBLE. mishap.

I was really expecting to see worse the way I heard Tom Hartman, Randi Rhodes et. al. speaking yesterday.

And I'm no Bush fan.

6. I have to agree with you there.
Bush was obviously shaking hands with a lot of people and yet appeared to wipe his hand on Clinton only once. And he didn't wipe his hand forcibly enough to convince me he was actually trying to wipe something onto Clinton.

Don't get me wrong, Bush is definitely an asshole, just not necessarily for this.

10. You must have watched a different video than I did.
How would you describe that gesture? How often do you see men doing that to each other? Clinton was busy using both hands to shake hands because there were so many people who wanted to touch him. But then Clinton has done these things many times and gets it that people want to touch him.

Why would Bush take time out to slide his hand down Clinton's arm? And what kind of gesture was that?

What I saw, and I watched it a few times just to make sure I wasn't reading something into it, was Bush wiping his hand on Clinton's shoulder and upper arm. Even the woman behind Clinton seems to have noticed as she looks at the gesture and then at Bush.

18. I can't explain his actions, but I still think his policies are a better indicator of his racism.

9. What would be way worse in your opinion?
Are you OK with having someone wipe their hands on you after shaking hands with someone? Do you do it on other people?

17. Actually, I rather think she got exactly the product she desired.
She's just as racist as he is. Let us not forget her comments during her "humanitarian mission" to Katrina refugees in Houston.

8. And the comments after the article defend Bush and attack Obama
Which fact makes me very grateful to have DU. I don't know what I would do if I had to constantly rub elbows with people who adore Bush. I do know that I would be very depressed as I was in 2004 when Bush was 're-elected'. Something I'm sure Karl Rove was involved in up to his ears. No one can convince me that having stolen the first election they would suddenly rely on an honest vote to keep him in office. It just doesn't work that way in real life or in criminal minds. The only reason we were able to get a majority of Democrats in 2006 was because as grandiose as their ability was to steal a presidential election they simply couldn't pull it off with the midterm elections. Too many candidates, although I'm sure a few key Republicans were helped.

The guy who shook Junior's hand should be the one worried. Who knows where Junior's fingers have been.
