MySpace photo costs teacher education degree
More proof of the sheer stupidity growing in the country: http://blog.washingtonpost.com/offbeat/2007/05/myspace_photo_costs_teacher_ed.html

Hopefully she owns them in this lawsuit. This by the way is the photo in question:

9. Even if she was drinking an alcoholic beverage,
I don't understand how and why that should prevent her from getting a teaching degree.
There is no law that teachers can't drink alcoholic beverages.
I don't understand this at all.

6. OK. So the paint job is pretty bad.
But she was going to teach English, not shop.

8. If only her last name were Bush.
Then she could get a job as a teacher's aide at a charter school, claim she was an elementary school teacher in DC for a year and a half, get a special internship offer with UNICEF, and then start shopping a book around.

10. She will win big and the district will make the students suffer.
Both my parents taught and I did for a few years - the admins in poorer districts are little better than, hmm, than crooked politicians. I could tell some stories that would make this one seem boring by comparison.

I hope she wins and the admin group that did this to her get fired. Stupid people should not be in charge of education.

11. More info in this article
from, of all places, Mtv News

http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1558467/20070501/id_0.jhtml

The school mascot is a pirate, she was on the dean's list, was given satisfactory ratings for student teaching and it was an advisor from the school that she did her student teaching that alerted the college.

12. I can't understand this at all.
I mean, when teachers are fired over naked photos, that's one thing.
But here is a woman drinking from a cup. How is that unprofessional? She is over legal drinking age.
It boggles the mind.

13. I heard about this earlier.
My best friend is a teacher and we were talking about it.

After hearing about this she informed me that there are a number of college pics of us at parties that need to be burned asap. She also said that in the pics of her at her wedding lifting her glass she wondered if she could get in trouble.

The woman was 25, a mother of two and dressed like the school mascot at Halloween time. She had good grades and did what was to be expected of her to graduate.

I'd sue for more than 75,000-alot more.

15. It is still absolutely 100% stupid, but it was the caption, not the picture
according to the article, the picture was captioned "drunken pirate" and that was the supposedly offensive thing.

It really doesn't matter, of course. She was over 21 at the time and besides, what a stupid reason to deny anyone a teaching certificate. What a stupid school.

seen things much more offensive than this photo and its caption.

getting a teaching job (such as it was).

This is beyond ridiculous. I see a young woman wearing a pirate hat and sipping from a Mr. Goodbar cup. I don't care what the caption was. Whoever prevented her from obtaining her teaching certificate deserves to have his/her ass sued.

18. Nothing whatsoever wrong in the photo
There's nothing wrong in that photo whatsoever. That is like, totally mild compared to a lot of the stuff that shows up on Myspace. Dress is fine. Pirate hat is merely humorous. Mr. Goodbar cup is just a cup - - - can't make assumptions about what's in it. Young woman appears healthy and normal.

Although I am not a big fan of lawsuits, I think she may have a case.
