The mad-dog conservatism seems to scare her, as it does many conservatives. This is why many analysts are reporting on a "split" in the GOP.

It's particularly visible among the religious faction. While the RadRelRight howls louder and louder, the defections are growing. Young white evangelicals are in the Blue Dog political range now, and both Mike Huckabee and Rick Warren have been taking flack for supporting programs giving relief to the poor and assistance to Haiti.

Granted, there is still a lot to oppose from some, many of these people, but it illustrates the ongoing "Conservative Crack-Up". But pulling one's head out of one's ass is never an easy, pleasant, or pretty task.
