My understanding is that police usually have to give out that information if it is requested under FOIA, but if they are actively investigating a suspect they're allowed to sit on it until they have made an arrest or given up for lack of evidence.

Call his district and DC offices. Get a story from one and then go from there. The different offices will likely not have the same story. If they say, "No comment, investigation pending" ask to be directed to the authorities conducting the investigation. Start with the Culpeper office, they are out in the sticks and staffed by hayseeds.
