BREAKING: Stephanie Miller Turns Down Chance to Be On MSNBC for Rest of Week
Dislocated Press May 2 2007

SECAUCUS - Radio host Stephanie Miller, invited to bring her program to MSNBC for three days, was recently offered the opportunity to stay for the rest of the week--but turned it down flat.

"As much as I'd like to stay, I must be going home to Los Angeles," said the surprisingly telegenic Miller. "Now that I know Keith Olbermann isn't here, and is actually in LA this week, I have to get back there right this instant."

Miller was said to have been "devastated" to learn that while she was flying to Secaucus to perform her show in the same studio from which Olbermann's news program normally generates, he was flying to the city from which she normally does her radio show.

"This is more irony than Alanis Morissette ever dreamed of," she wailed, "but it's all right, because I figured that if I leave Secaucus right now, I should be able to make it back to LA just in time to meet Keith. I only hope I'm bringing enough sweat pads and industrial-strength antiperspirant. Then again, I'd like to think Keith would prefer a woman to be hot and sweaty."

Miller was later seen leaving the MSNBC studios for the airport wearing a trench coat, dark glasses and a sturdy pair of astronaut diapers. It was not known whether she had packed a steel mallet, latex gloves or a recording of Barry White's Greatest Hits.

The only fault I found today was that she uses the thought-pauser "You know" more often than she should. But Thom Hartmann does it, and so do I.

Good news. Just found out Stephanie is on 970 AM M-F 6 AM to 8 AM here in Portland, Oregon. I don't even know about that station.

C'mon, guys, stop this. This is a real open radio job for a really talented woman. You will have people thinking she isn't trying out for one of the best slots available right now.

Just format it correctly and you won't have any problems.

For what it's worth, we all think she's fab. I've actually had the pleasure of speaking to her on the air, and she's read some of these and other DU threads on the air before, as well as mentioned DU many times.

It's all good.

They have such an advantage with all the neat equipment -- producer in the same room is great! I can't believe they do so much with graphics, sound and video clips, etc.

I saw the station go from a tiny and cramped studio to that glorious MSNBC layout over the past years.

I used to say, "Don Imus, you don't deserve that studio or your air time anymore. You don't have the brains or the stamina to go on with this. You're used up and the people who use your airtime should know what you say about them. And the way you treat your wife is absolutely horrific."

Thank goodness he's "radioactive" toast now!

his "humor" was so far beneath anything I consider funny, it actually created a new low. I'm surprised he made it to the studio...then again, he had people that could get him there.

Stephanie seems just so incredibly happy to be alive, she is a wonder to behold...:loveya:

Lived In New York from '62-'69, I remember Don as a fellow with a deep voice on some AM station.
Edited on Tue May-01-07 11:28 PM by Radio_Lady
I worked at NBC's "Tonight Show" unit with Johnny Carson's brother, Dick Carson, the director. In 1963, I was with the NBC News Division when John Kennedy was shot -- we stayed up all Friday night and most of Saturday assembling raw film and narration to put on teleprompter.

Then went to WPIX-TV as On-Air Promotion Supervisor. I spent quite a few years on the production side of radio.

Mostly, I listened to classical music on WQXR, jazz or other stuff on WNYC and maybe some WINS -- I think that's right.

Don Imus stepped in so much crap with McQuirk or whatever his name was that it finally showered on him. I'm not shedding many tears for that guy.

You're probably too young to remember Barry Gray, at WMCA. I was his production assistant for a little while. He was a wonderful interviewer and probably the first person to interview people over the telephone and/or accept call-ins. That was also in the 1960s.

74. No, I remember Barry Gray...WMCA was a great station...
WPIX...channel 11 IFIRC...:)

I recall channel 13 as the PBS station, ABC was 7; NBC was 4; CBS was 2....and Channel 9 had "Million Dollar Theater" and a bunch of other great shows.

IFIRC, Joe Klein did a thing w/silents on some nights.

I recall Kenendy being shot that day, they let us out of school early, it was the only time in my life when I could not hear a sound in NYC, (we were in jamaica, Queens). It was one of hte saddest days of my life....and to see Oswald murdered on live TV was astounding.

I can't recall thename of the guy who had the call-in show about all kinds of occult/strange things though...:)

Remember Zacherly?...

90. I remember the name Zacherly, but mostly I listened to classical music and jazz on FM.
Occult/strange things -- the only person I know who did that was Art Bell?

Channel 11, WPIX ran Chuck McCann as the kids' host and Jack LaLanne's exercise program. There was also a Captain Joe someone doing a kid's show.

The whole history of local hosts of children's programs is covered in a wonderful book called "Hi There, Boys and Girls." I think it was published by the University of Mississippi press, and I talked to the author during my current stint at OPB.

94. This wasn't Art Bell, but it was like that format...I'll think of it
sooner or later, maybe I'll call my brother later.

Zacherly was a really strange/funny ghoul-type character that climbed out of a coffin to introduce bad 50's Horror Flicks. Personally, I think Elvira looked a heck of a lot better...

Chuck McCann was really talented, he did a lot more than kids shows, he was smart as a whip too.
Jack LaLanne...he's like 95 or something now, and he still looks in pretty good shape...:)

Locals...Hmmmm...Officer Joe Bolton brought the 3 Stooges every evening, always telling us to be nice and never do what the Stooges did; Soupy Sales was on too.

Howdy Doody! w/Buffalo Bob...one of my neighbors, Michelle, got in the show and found out that Howdy's voice was just Buffalo Bob off screen, not even trying to do ventriloquism...she was heart broken.

Bozo the Clown...Michelle made it that one too...someone in her family HAD to know somebody...:(

There was a Fireman too, he was the run in for Popeye.

Captain Kangaroo & Mr. Greenjeans...Mr. Bunnyrabbit too...:D

And then there were the Sat AM cartoons and the Westerns!...:D

TV was fun back in those days, lot's of it was live and I can even remember watching the News w/my parents, didn't understand a lot until later, but I did see that smoking was OK...:eyes:

Thinking about this, I wasted a lot of time in front of the Idiot Box...B&W no less, we didn't get a color TV until 67-68 or so.

But the messages for kids were pretty simple, don't do what you see, these are actors and they have a lot of practice; be nice to people you meet; give up your seat on the bus to an older person; if you see someone drop something, pick it up and return it...stuff like that. Worked pretty well, I didn't turn out too bad, and I've passed those things down to my son, whom everyone says is a gentleman...:D

95. addendum: I spoke w/my brother and the guy I was thinking of
was Long John Nevill, he thinks it was on WOR.

He would talk all kinds of weird stuff and had Randi on as a debunker. Long before Art Bell, Nevill was talking aliens, time travel, magentospherics and a host of other stuff that most people find "odd", but also interesting. At the same time, The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits were at their zenith and when all mixed together, it made for some interesting times...:D

98. Long John Nebel and Barry Gray, my former employer, in Wikipedia:

Barry Gray
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_Gray_%28radio%29

Long John Nebel
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Nebel

One of the talk hosts on 970 AM Portland, OR today said that sometimes people go to Wikipedia and post their own information. I guess it's like writing your own memoir on line.

Here's Stephanie Miller:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephanie_Miller It's been updated VERY recently.

Current show

In September 2004, The Stephanie Miller Show was launched by Democracy Radio and WYD Media Management. The live show is broadcast weekdays from 9 a.m. to noon Eastern Time in dozens of U.S. cities, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Miami, Seattle, and Washington, D.C. It is also replayed in the evening on Sirius Satellite Radio.

In 2006, Miller had numerous appearances on several cable news shows, such as Larry King Live, to represent the progressive political point of view. After an October 13, 2006 appearance on the Fox News program Hannity & Colmes, where Miller defended peace activist Cindy Sheehan, a viewer mailed an ominous letter to Fox News, which was interpreted as a death threat and forwarded to Miller's agent. The incident was notable because the letter's author included his phone number, and Miller took the unusual step of calling him live on her October 30, 2006 show.

On April 30, 2007 through May 2, 2007, Miller filled in for the recently fired Don Imus on MSNBC's 6AM - 9AM EDST time slot. Miller and her on-air staff received generally favorable reviews for their filling in of Imus's former time slot.

Personal life

Miller has never been married. She often mentions her dogs on her radio show; she currently lives with two Great Pyrenees (Puff and Max). Her best friend wrote a children's book inspired by Miller's St. Bernard, Chester. Chester died a few months before the book's release in mid-2006. Her Newfoundland, Poo Bear, lived for two years with bone cancer before dying on March 30, 2007; she devoted a portion of her April 2 show to discussing his life. Miller has done promotional events for animal welfare organizations.

104. Absolutely agree with you 100%. My only notes on her stint are as follows:
Edited on Thu May-03-07 12:20 AM by Radio_Lady
1. Stephanie, you might try talking just a little slower. Sometimes the information you're conveying comes at me so fast that I almost feel exhausted trying to just follow you reading and talking. Perhaps it's not so noticeable on radio -- add video and it's a different impression. Anyway, this all may be due to a case of nerves, which I certainly have had in my time, especially those first days on TV and on radio.

2. Both you and Thom Hartmann say "you know" about twelve times in every five minute segment. I have two days out of three on tape and I thought about rewinding to count them, but forget it. I just don't have the time. (I'm going to Europe early next week.) Think about eliminating those "pausing phrases" ("like" is the one the younger kids use; those of us who are older use "you know"). You don't have to really worry about dead air. We'll wait until your mouth catches up with your brain. There's a whole book on this subject written by a woman, but I've forgotten her name.

Also, I might not have continued to spin on the "underarm wetness" or on the putrid smell of Secaucus. People in Secaucus say the smell is coming from other NJ cities, anyway. Just like in Los Angeles -- the smog is always getting better. Except Los Angeles was just voted the smoggiest city in the nation and my home town, Pittsburgh, PA, was second. People in Pittsburgh think the air is cleaner than it was when I was born there in 1939.

Otherwise, I give you an "A+" plus, particularly for standing your ground on issues and just sparring with the long-winded negative-nabobs-of-noise and the nay-sayers who called and agreeing with the woman who said she liked Imus but can't stand you! No problem, sweetheart!

Been there, done that.

92. Imus was on one of the late shifts at WNBC
in the late 60s or early 70s.

as far as WPIX-TV goes, i have fond memories of getting to be on "Electric Village" on Channel 11 in the late 60s, when Mark Lindsay and Paul Revere were the guest hosts. i even got on camera with Unca Paul a few times :-)

BJ Thomas was one of the guests ("Eyes Of A New York Woman" was his first hit and that was the one he was pushing), and i also recall one of those girlie cabaret/pop singers who frequented NYC at the time, whose name i can't remember.

of course i remember Barry Gray, my mom was addicted to talk radio. amongst her other radio faves were Barry Farber, Long John Nebel, and Herb Oscar Anderson.

those memories did my heart good.

65. This story is the God's honest truth. Larry King's job loss in Miami helped me retrieve myself...
Edited on Tue May-01-07 11:07 PM by Radio_Lady
from working at a fully legitimate escort service.

It was called Rent-A-Bird, operated out of a home in Miami, Florida, and was a legitimate business listed with the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce.

There were paid dates -- gals got $80 a night to take visiting male tourists out to dinner and dancing. No sex allowed -- you were told that "pretext" customers would occasionally go out with you to make sure you weren't soliciting.

Larry King, whom I had dated once in my late teens, had a program at WIOD on the Causeway between Miami and Miami Beach. One night, he asked his audience for coffee and Mallomars, one of his favorite delicacies. I brought him some, re-introduced myself (I was a former TV show host at WTVJ in Miami in college, graduated with a BA in Radio-TV-Film). I started answering the phone because it kept ringing and ringing... Basically, I did my own show with people who were on HOLD!

We did shticks like Stephanie and crew -- Larry did many voices on filter mike, interviewed celebrities and spun music. He was an amazing sportscaster, and of course it was the perfect season for the Miami Dolphins -- won all their games and went to the Super Bowl and won that. He had a kid named Gary who did comedy. WIOD's signal was 50,000 watts. We got calls from boats in the Bahamas! I screened the calls until December a few days before Christmas. Larry was arrested and booked. He lost his three jobs, TV, radio and newspaper column. I took his place. (It took him literally years to get in financial shape and back on the air. He was never actually prosecuted for the charge.)

The rest is history. Everything here is true.

70. Larry couldn't handle money. It was a shame. I saw it up close.
Edited on Tue May-01-07 11:19 PM by Radio_Lady
If he made $500, he spent $700.

But he finally got wise and did more radio so he could get more money, and I guess he hired some financial people to help him out along the way.

His personality is a real conundrum -- but then, I haven't seen or heard from him since December 1971. I sent him a birthday gift on November 19, 1972 and told him about my success in Boston. He never responded.

One night, I called him on Westwood Radio and reminded him of our brief association. He didn't remember me.

Recently, on a trip, I called the radio engineer, now retired, who worked with us -- he did the engineering for Larry's show for YEARS. Steve Z. said he met Larry at some function and went to shake his hand. Larry didn't seem to remember him, either.

I started in TV and on January 4, 1957 -- WTVJ, Miami. (See photo below.) Larry began on WAHR-AM, Miami, that same year -- and this week he's celebrating 50 years in broadcasting. I guess we've both been in the business for about the same time, with time off for good behavior!

In peace,

Radio Lady in Oregon

85. Yes, Skipper Chuck Zink. He was both a blessing and a curse to me...
Edited on Wed May-02-07 12:37 PM by Radio_Lady
I was First Mate Ellen, his first co-host from January 1957 to October 1958. Chuck had other young women in this position after me, until the show ended in 1979. Later, he did announcing for Century Village and did radio work in his senior years.

After a first year of college at the University of Miami, I enrolled in U.C.L.A. My grandmother lived there, and of course, the film and TV world was there. Regrettably, the living arrangements didn't work out -- and my Dad got sick in Florida, so I had to return home. But I did finish college at the University of Miami, receiving an honors degree in Radio-TV-Film. I actually interned at WCKT/WIOD's TV department, responding to viewer mail for the show "Bonanza" in the early 60's!

I think the longest running co-host one was "Annie" -- I think she was the daughter of a woman named Doris B. who was a long-term friend of CZ. I believe she spoke about him at his memorial in January 2006. However, I left Florida in 1962 after graduation from college to "make my splash" in New York City.

Chuck and I kept in touch sporadically, and he was in and out of my life for decades. He was a married man who was 14 years older than me, but who represented a caring and interested male figure in my life until the mid-1980s. Long story... I still dream about him. Here's a sweet picture of him in his younger years, before he came to Florida. He must have been in his teens or twenties. I found this photo on the Internet after he died.

Were you the one who requested details of my checkered past in Florida?

If I can find it, I'll PM it to you.

PS. We're coming to Miami in December for the first time since my mother passed away in 1991. I will recognize nothing because so much time has elapsed since I visited there. I hope to see a couple of friends, including my very first boyfriend, age 71 and his older brother, now 81 years old, I believe.

and I grew up here and have lived here most of my life. Actually, about a mile from WIOD.

I don't remember who the woman was when I was on (I think I was five), but I remember Scrubby.

I listened to Chuck Zink until he died. I used to enjoy that station, but I could only get it around the office since it was in Broward.

Have a great time while you're here, and thanks for all the great stories. I wasn't the one who asked, but I'm glad you told me.

I was hired a few days before the New Year 1957. I think Ray Gaber was the director and Lloyd Gaines was the producer of the "new" kid's show, Popeye Playhouse. Lloyd told me one day that he chose me because I looked like one of his old girlfriends!

Incidentally, WTVJ, 316 North Miami Avenue, Miami, Florida was originally a theater, was torn down many years ago. WTVJ was then moved to the north -- not sure where but are they now it Miramar? Channel 4 then became an NBC affiliate (it was CBS in the 1950s). Katie Couric worked there, but that was long after I had moved on.

I have no idea what that area looks like now, Flagler Street (with the old Olympia Theater that had vaudeville acts and movies when I was a little kid), N. E. 2nd Avenue (where my uncle owned a sporting goods store). My first boyfriend, who worked with his brother in that area until recently, told me that I will be amazed how the city has changed. He was in the retail camera business there for more than fifty years!

I thought it was Disassociated Press.

Clue for Momma: make sure when you run into KO you're wearing a perfume called "Honus Wagner". It's a not-so-subtle mixture of tobacco and bubble gum, with overtones of steamed hot dogs and neats foot oil.

16. I resent this entire thread. Stephanie is an excellent talent. I defy MSNBC to find anyone better.
I've called for the DU to help her get the show. This post better be satire (Disassociated Press? Please cite your link or let me know this is your idea of sarcasm.) I'm about ready to come and belt you in the mouth for your ugly FAKE reportage. If you want to fight me, bring it on!

Here's my original thread:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=105&topic_id=6472050&mesg_id=6472050

Stephanie Miller deserves the MSNBC morning slot! Let's try to make that happen!

I saw Stephanie Miller for the first time Monday on MSNBC, and I was just blown away. Today she was even better. Stephanie and her two-man crew are amazingly talented. Apparently, she will only be on MSNBC for one more day (Wednesday, May 2) in an early AM timeslot. On the West Coast, that's 3 AM to 6 AM -- please adjust for other time zones -- and tape the show if you can.)

We should do something to help this talented woman get a real chance to take over the simulcast spot that opened up last month.

If you have never seen her or heard her, go to her web site: http://www.stephaniemiller.com or read about her on Wikipedia. She was voted as one of the top 100 radio hosts by "Talkers" magazine.

22. Dear Radio Lady,
We're huge fans of Stephanie, and Botany and BerryBush's original satire threads helped Steph get this chance.

The jokes have a backstory you can catch up on, and all is meant with affection and the kind of goofy support that Stephie deserves and thrives on.

Thanks for caring!

Woke up early this morning and watched the last hour on MSNBC live while getting ready for a rummage sale at our Unitarian fellowship. Then, I found her at the local station 970 AM, broadcast from 6AM to 8AM. I think I'll have to adjust the buttons on my AM car radios!

Tucker Carlson tomorrow? Well, I won't be watching that guy. He couldn't dance on "Dancing With The Stars," and he's certainly another parrot for the right-wing zealots.

23. You know, if you want it or need it, you get up. I did Larry King's show after he was arrested in
1971. 11 PM to 5 AM -- until I got another job in which I worked 10 AM to 2 PM Monday through SATURDAY. I was a liberal talk show host in the imprint of one of the originals, Barry Gray, at WMCA, New York.

I was divorced, had two children under the age of three, plus a dog and a mortgage.

You do what you have to. Keith and Stephanie are quite talented -- humor and news -- Larry King used to do it in Miami before he got into financial trouble.

I ran into the same running gag -- one of the all-night guys Larry Glick in Boston used to call my program in the afternoon and invite me out. I never went, but we had a great time talking about it!

AP 5/1/2007

Seacaucus, New Jersey

Hazard waste units have finished removing Stephanie Miller's magical purple sweater
from MSNBC studios in Seacaucus, New Jersey.

Miller, 57, of Hollywood California was told that a toxic waste clean up crew had
isolated her sweater in a bomb and flame proof container.

New Jersey State Police closed down I 95 as the containment truck took Miller's garment
to a solid waste landfill that accepted toxic materials.

81. ...
Steph said this morning that Tucker would be filling in for the rest of this week

We need to bombard Dan Abrams with emails, calls and snail mail to keep her on the air

105. She said she was flying home to California today, Wednesday.
Hey, Stephanie, we're going through Newark early next week on our way to Europe!

Sorry I'm missing you!

106. Riiiightttt. Now you're talkin' --- Larry King went there, and before him, Johnny Carson...

If she's a hot talent, they'll work it out, believe me.

OT: Is Randi Rhodes still working out of a NYC location? She said she has a home in Florida and I presume her niece is still living with her, although she may be in college by now. Frankly, I tired of her "monologues" after a year or so. She takes only a few telephone calls, and that's too bad. Randi is a very bright woman -- I had been hearing about her for years from my friends and acquaintances in Florida. I was thrilled when she went on AAR and was a regular listener. But the "sameness" of her show got to me. I got sick of "Bounce Your Boobies" and "I love you more."

I have to admit, a woman without a New York accent is just a tad easier on my eardrums. It's OK with Larry King because he has a very smooth and resonant voice. But then, I'd rather listen to Keith Olbermann or Jon Stewart. Announcers used to come mostly from the midwestern states because they had the "purest speech." When people from Boston told me they wanted to be on radio, and needed my advice, I used to say, "You have to be born... SOMEWHERE ELSE!" But Boston has its share of local guys who did OK, at least in that city.

107. I've never liked Randi Rhodes.
I always wondered how she got a show at all.

sales technique. Turns it around on people. NICE!!
