What does "shots fired" sound like?
I'm serious. I never know if I hear my rural neighbors target practicing, taking out varmints or if it's a tree branch breaking!

1. Or a firecracker or car backfiring. With a single 1 or 2 shots,
it's very hard to tell the difference.

3. It;s like this...4 am Odd number of "pops" followed 5 minutes later
by sirens.

In Helenville, WI it would take about 15 minutes, on average, for a sheriff's squad to show probably not with a siren but maybe with flashing lights.

In town it's usually about 5 minutes, sirens and lights.

5. depends entirely on the gun and the caliber of the ammo
22 can sound like a popcap gun.

9. this
a hunting rifle sounds one way, a handgun another.

In my experience, gunshots tend to have a deeper note in them. They can be very high-pitched, but there's generally a lower tone as well.

But that's just from my ear

10. Right, a 22 pops, a 38 booms and there's a different sound
for every single firearm out there.

It's sad when a non gun enthusiast can tell them apart by the sound.

13. Ever hear an OLD M-80 (the real ones). Sounds like that.
Modern firecrackers don't have the low tones to really simulate gunfire.

.22's sound alot like engines backfiring.
Centerfire pistol (9mm, .40, .45) is similar but MUCH MUCH louder
Shotgun sounds alot like a centerfire pistol but with a lower tone.
Centerfire rifles are very sharp and very loud. There will also likely be a sonic crack (sounds like a firecracker's echog).

A silenced pistol sounds alot like slamming a car door shut or very loud hand clap.
A silenced rifle is drowned out by the sound of it's sonic crack. Sounds alot like shooting a regular .22

14. Go to a gun range, rent a 9mm, .40, or .45 and hear for yourself. You'll have fun too! ;)

15. Unless you are in the middle of a serious ice storm or a huge beetle

infestation, or perhaps a true multi-year drought or an earthquake, tree branches really don't break that frequently.

On the other hand, varmit control would be a serious concern, especially
if my nickname was "hedgehog". That seems ironic. ;)
