Tam High students invite Mississippi lesbian to attend prom

Students at Tamalpais High School are hoping to do what neither the ACLU nor a federal court have been able to accomplish: give Mississippi teen Constance McMillen the chance to attend a prom with her girlfriend.

"At this point, I'm hoping that she'll agree to come," said Sarah Schwartz, a Tam High senior who launched the effort to invite McMillen to the Mill Valley school's prom. "But even if she doesn't, I feel there's been a wonderful effort by this community and a statement that we're willing to stand behind her bravery, and accept her for who she is."

McMillen, who has been openly gay since she was in the eighth grade, had hoped to attend her prom at Itawamba Agricultural High School in Fulton, Miss., dressed in a tuxedo and with her 16-year-old girlfriend as a date.

snip...
Schwartz, however, believes McMillen deserves to attend a school-sponsored prom. She has sent McMillen an invitation to attend Tam High's prom with her girlfriend on May 16. She has not received a reply.

"Being in my senior year, I know how important it is to have a prom," said Schwartz, 17. "To have that taken away because the people around you don't accept you didn't feel fair at all. I felt I needed to do something."

Schwartz launched a group in support of her idea on the social networking site Facebook. More than 150 people, mostly Tam High students, joined the group within an hour, Schwartz said. As of Wednesday, the group had 369 members.

1. that is a very kind gesture
i think it's one of those things where you can't really help even tho you want to tho

nothing will quite take the place of being able to attend prom at her OWN school

still the kindness and decency these students have shown w. this invitation is really heart-warming

5. It is amazingly beautiful surroundings up in...
Mill Valley....The trip probably would be a grand adventure for both girls. They would be truly welcomed.

You are correct, though, about the chance to go to your own High School prom...

9. I would hope so..
It would be a drop in the bucket, in that place.

A couple of the students could likely come up with it out of their "walking around money".

3. I told my brother a couple of years ago to tell all of the gays in his conservative
rural county to come on down to California we would be happy to make them feel right at home here.

He looked at me somewhat stunned.

For some reason telling someone that we would value something that they already had made it seem like I wanted to steal something from them. Now he was thinking "No way am I going to let these Californians take our gays". I was surprised that of all of our words on the subject this had the most impact.

4. Aww that's so sweet
All I can think of is

Constance McMillen is gradually becoming a hero and has done a great job standing up for oppressed teenage homosexuals. For too long school admins have been ignoring the problem. If Prop 8 is nullified in court this'll be even MORE symbolic...California would both accept same-sex marriage AND give promnesty!
