Schadenfreude alert: David Frum lost his health insurance when he got canned by the AEI..
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/postpartisan/2010/03/aei_hits_david_frum_where_it_h.html

Those Republican brutes! It’s bad enough not to tolerate David Frum’s dissent on health care -- especially since his judgments have been stunningly correct. But in ousting him after a mad overnight revolt among its donors, the American Enterprise Institute has put Frum’s family into precisely the health care hell that Obamacare seeks to remedy. What many people don’t realize about the think tank world is that the policy types who serve as modestly paid fellows do so in large part for the health coverage. In our antiquated employer-based system, middle-aged wonks simply have to be attached to a group to be insurable. If you and your spouse have reached your 40s and have had even modest health bumps along the way, you'll never be able to get coverage in the pre-Obamacare individual market (as my wife and I discovered and documented in this New York Times Magazine piece a few years ago).

2. So now, the work to 'fix the bill' has a poster boy
We need single payer so abusive, thick skulled, thin skinned, vindictive employers don't get to ruin people along with throwing them outta a job.

3. His has a pre-existing condition
that makes him unqualified for Republican talking-head reindeer-games.

A BRAIN.

4. There is no Schadenfreude here, David Frum tragedy is ours as well
He sees the problem, and has pointed it out.

One of the things he suggested to the Repugs is to stop supporting employer-based health insurance, for this very reason.

We should be reaching out to him; he could be a powerful ally.

6. Well, I'm going to savor it anyway..
Those who live by the sword die by it, Frum helped uncork the genie's bottle and now it has turned around and taken a mighty chunk out of his ass.

9. He is now an American citizen...
as of September 2007. His wife may still hold her Canadian citizenship though.

11. He wouldn't have lost his Canadian citizenship though, would he?
I didn't think the US insists you give up all others. It might try to carry on taxing him if he moved back to Canada, though - there'd be some irony in that.

13. No - he is a dual citizen.
Edited on Thu Mar-25-10 09:05 PM by Lucy Goosey
Anyway, health coverage is contigent on residence, not citizenship, so any non-citizen (legal) resident of the country can get healthcare.

12. He's a self-loathing Canadian. He once referred to Canada as a "socialist gulag"
He is a dual citizen now, so yes, he could move back to Toronto, but I think he would do anything he could to avoid it.
