Savannah, Georgia school planning to fire entire staff (then employees may "re-apply")
SAVANNAH, Ga. — A struggling Georgia high school plans to fire its entire staff in an effort to avoid being taken over by the state.

Savannah-Chatham County schools spokeswoman Karla Redditte (REHD-iht) said Thursday superintendent Thomas Lockamy met with teachers and staff at Beach High School to tell them about the plan.

Employees are being told that they may reapply for their jobs. The same number of positions will be available but only half of the teachers can be rehired under federal education law. It makes the school eligible for up to $6 million in federal grants.

A similar action at a high school in Rhode Island prompted outrage from the teachers' union and anger at President Barack Obama when he said he supported the move.

2. This is how the "temp" businesses proliferated..
Edited on Thu Mar-25-10 11:23 PM by SoCalDem
Businesses got tired of having to put up with all that "seniority-health care benefits-paid vacation-sick time-paid days off-etc" so they "sold" their staff, and then "offered" to rehire some on contract basis and left the "details" to the temp agencies..

Companies and now school districts are seeing the "benefit" of not having to "cater to" long-time uppity employees.. ..they can make a whole lot more money if they can just "rent" them whenever they need them, and just wash their hands of them when it suits them..:grr:

Watch.,...

the long-time teachers will not be the ones they hire back.. they will want the younger ones who have humongous loans to repay..the hungry ones who will not rock the boat..

5. This is what happens when hotels get sold in Hawai'i.
Except that everyone can, and usually does, get re-hired.

'Tis a sad day indeed when teachers are treated even worse than that. :grr:
