A Thank You To DU Men
A Thank You to DU men, who stand with women on issues of civil rights, personhood, reproductive rights and privacy and especially to those who act upon that support and speak up in solidarity on DU.

One, who I will not call out and he knows who he is, did so yesterday and somehow in the ensuing subthread being deleted for mysterious reasons, his initial supportive comment was also removed. This means that the gratitude expressed was also deleted. It's a shame if thanking those men who DO visibly support women's rights on DU, is seen as detrimental to those who don't (speak up) or pointing out the rarity of it. Yet it is remarkable.

Some who are strong and active supporters also downplayed the actual impacts and effect -- immediate and potential -- and precedent setting aspects of the StupidPact Amen-dment.

It may be a stretch, to ask people, males, to consider what it would be like if it were their life, their body, that is used as battleground, bargaining chip, political baggage, belittled and bound to be considered less than fully human, not fully invested with the rights of citizenship. (Damn I wrote something rilly rilly good and it was disappeared....) African Americans -- at least the women and many of the men -- understand what I'm talkin' about and I would not make too close comparisons to being officially considered "3/5ths of a person" but what the hell!! Corporations are more fully recognized as persons than women are! And to many many of the birth bigots, zygotes are more valuable human beings than the women who bear them are.

No. If you are male and you wanna talk strategery and who the next SCOTUS appointment is and tell us it "didn't change anything" and it was "symbolic," not only are you mistaken about what the amendment does LEGALLY, you are oblivious to what it does perceptually and in terms of precedent and possible future harm, because YOU DO NOT HAVE A FEMALE BODY.

The worst aspect is that this piece of shit AMEN-dment came from a "Democrat."

So, thank you, men who get it. Thank you for being here and thank you for the times that you speak up on behalf of people who just happen to have that Y chromosome and the power to give life.

38. I agree with you.
I've never even had a notion in my head that women were in any way unequal to men. I don't know if my mother had any conscious plan to instill such thinking in me, but she clearly was the rudder of our family. Dad was just the propellor. It worked. Workplace rights, reproductive rights, any rights - women should be afforded them. The Dark Ages should be left to history, plain and simple.

7. What disturbs me most about the Democratic Party of late is
Edited on Fri Mar-26-10 06:25 AM by mmonk
that it even considers bringing in ideas that set back the rights of women. The party doesn't seem to care about the people that have made it great and the ideals of equality for its citizens that made it so.

14. We all have mothers. And some of us are lucky enough to have sisters.
And some of us are lucky enough to have daughters.

So, some of us, not all of us, but most of us, support women as much as we can.
But not all of us, yet some of us, still just don't get it at all.

We must strive to find something to agree on and that thing is EQUALITY!!
And we will strive towards that common goal or else we aren't worth the sand an ant makes his farm in.

God made women because he improved on his mistake!!!
Women are more advanced technologically, emotionally, genetically, mentally, and spiritually.

That's why the first caveman reached for a club -- he was losing his argument!!!

30. For me I just don't think I have the right to tell anyone what to do with their body.
I know a lot of people wouldn't approve of what I've done with mine, but fuck 'em. I know we've crosses swords on some issues, even this one when it brushes up against free speech issues (which trumps both male and female for me), but in the end I can't even comprehend telling someone else, male or female, what they HAVE to do with their bodies. The only hands I want on my body are the ones I allow.

Edited on Fri Mar-26-10 11:05 PM by lumberjack_jeff
... then how can any of us "get it"? And why would stumbling onto the right opinion be praiseworthy? By your words, it's apparent we reach proper conclusions only through blind ignorance.

Those of the opposite gender who agree with me are the only ones to be regarded as fully sentient. Their clear thinking is remarkable, given their limited abilities.

I've heard this before but I always thought it was a little 19th century for my taste.

The bill was suboptimal in many ways, but I'm still thrilled that it passed.

But I don't really need a pat on the back for supporting womens' rights - I just call that "being a civilized human being." My hope is that we can get to a point in society where it isn't shocking to find men who call themselves feminists, etc, since there's no reason why anyone (male or female) who lives in modern 21st century society should be afraid to call themselves that.

and just in case nobody else has mentioned it:

Re "Thank you for being here and thank you for the times that you speak up on behalf of people who just happen to have that Y chromosome and the power to give life."

You should have said, "...who just happen to have that XX chromosome and the power to give life."

The Y chomosome (actually XY chomosome) is the male chromosome. The XX chromosome is the female.

73. We progressives need to force democratic leaders to be bolder on issues dealing with women!
Passage of the health care reform bill, although seriously flawed, is cause for celebration because, if nothing else, it gives the democrats in office a renewed drive to stand up for all the other progressive causes we are fighting for. The health care reform success is every empowering to democratic congress members. I hope this success is parleyed into successes in all the other progressive causes. Hopefully now they will dump any and all ideas of bipartisanship. To his credit, President Obama tried to get republican participation, but now he, and congress, should know better. They need to focus on doing what is right and completely ignore the republican party. Those on the right have demonstrated over and over again that they are against all progress and any solution to our nation's problems. To hell with them and their obstructionist behavior.
