McCain sinking in AZ and now could lose Primary
Edited on Fri Mar-26-10 01:50 PM by grantcart

On edit replier has noted that it isn't the latest poll which shows McCain ahead

The more insteresting news is that the Republicans are moving ahead to try and close the primary.

Latest poll shows McCain virtually tied with Hayworth actually behind him with white males.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dawn-teo/john-mccain-could-lose-se_b_365364.html

PHOENIX, AZ -- Rasmussen announced a new poll on Friday showing Senator John McCain may be in trouble at home where a polarized electorate has him facing constant criticism from both the left and the right.

The poll shows McCain tied with former Congressman and current talk radio host J.D. Hayworth in a hypothetical Republican primary. Hayworth, who has become an outspoken local hero among immigration-control activists, lost his House seat to Rep. Harry Mitchell (D) in 2006. Since then, Hayworth has promoted the Tea Parties on his radio show and has spoken at Tea Party events, including the April 15 rally in Phoenix. Hayworth has expressed interest in running but has been tight-lipped on whether or not he intends to actually file as a candidate against McCain.

Rasmussen has McCain at 45% and Hayworth at 43% (4% margin of error). Although McCain's loudest opponents from the right usually cite immigration as the key issue, Minutmen founder Chris Simcox only reached 4% in the poll. According to the poll, Hayworth is more popular overall among the GOP, especially among the younger GOP sect. McCain fares better with females and moderate Republicans.

Then there is this:

Republican Party lawyers are trying to close the AZ party:

http://www.azstarnet.com/news/local/govt-and-politics/elections/article_dd8d890f-d762-5591-bba8-1495bbc75cd8.html

Lawyers for the state Republican Party are huddling to try to find out how they can close their primary election.

Republican leaders who attended a mandatory state meeting last month voted to put a halt to the state's quasi-open primary system. Voters in 1998 approved allowing independents and voters in minor parties to vote in the Democratic or Republican primary.

Some observers think that without independents McCain would lose substantially. This would be payback for McCain/AZ Republican infighting in the past.

on edit the poll cited is dated - but the race is still close.

The developing news is that the Republicans are moving to close their primary which would hurt McCain

http://www.kpho.com/politics/22926979/detail.html

PHOENIX -- The Arizona Republican Party is considering closing their primary elections to independent voters.

The party committee directed the state party chairman in January to explore the costs and legal options for making the move.

"Some folks in the party think the best way to ensure the Republican brand means something is to ensure that only Republicans are voting in our primary," said Lee Miller, an attorney for the state GOP.

In Arizona, independent voters can vote in either the Republican or Democratic primary.

If the Republican primary is closed, it could hurt Sen. John McCain who is renowned for his appeal to independent voters.

1. Looks like the Democrats can pick this one up
in a General Election. JD Hayworth is really out there.

5. Yes but this is Arizona.
Most of the governors wind up in jail. And they elected JD before. He is totally nuts, but they like that.

14. Explain this to me as a New Yorker.
I simply can not fathom how a majority of people would elect an idiot like Hayworth to office. Yes we had Massa but he is gone and has no support in NY anymore.

17. Can't.

I lived in Phoenix for six years. Experienced a Sheriff Joe campaign. Can't explain him either.

My impressions were that Phoenix is the end of a migration path from the Midwest. Like Florida is a destination for Easterners. Most of the people I encountered were sensible, and I would guess many were Democrats. So the mystery deepens. At least for me.

Fortunately I can speak as a New Yorker. I'm from Far Rockaway. Maybe that's why I can't explain it.

19. I live in Texas, and I can't understand it
I meet people that I would have otherwise thought of as reasonably intelligent, only to find out they subscribe to the most ridiculous teabagger nonsense. People show up at the ballot box to vote in the likes of Gov Goodhair Perry, and the perennial flake, Kay-Bailey-Hutchison against their own and the country's best interest.

8. McCain Must Really Be Biting His Tongue ........
having to eat crow and bring Palin in to help him out is really scraping around the bottom of the barrel. He's got to be pissed - but putting on a happy face to confront the toughest election of his career. I hope it's a career ender. Not only will he be gone - but Palin would lose face for not pulling it out for him.

13. Gotta say, Hayworth would be worse.
McCain may be prickly and petty, but at least he has reached across the aisle in the past.

Hayworth is so blindly partisan he even believes his own bullshit. And with his own radio show, now hundreds of people do too. (The rest probably tune in for the comedic effect.)

15. I never thought I'd see the day when I rooted for J. D. Hayworth.
McCain will never come to grips with losing the election to Obama and, if elected again, will continue his crybaby whine-a-thon for 6 more years. Maybe we'll get lucky and the Democrat will win in the general.

We have serious issues that we have to face every day as a nation. We don't need an idiot like Hayworth bumbling his way through important committees.

Yes I do want the lesser of two evils if we can't get a Democrat to win that seat.

26. McCain picked up his marbles and went home a sore loser over health care. Can't
wait to see how he takes losing in the primary. Hope a Democrat picks up his seat from him or Hayworth if that is at all possible.
