Support Striking Workers in Mass. Vote in TV Poll |
|
Edited on Fri Mar-26-10 02:31 PM by louis c
Hello Duers. We have an ongoing strike at Shaw's Super Markets in Massachusetts. There are 300 drivers that belong to UFCW. TV 5 in Boston is conducting a poll. Please scroll down in the left hand side of the page. Please support the striking workers by voting no and please keep this kicked. We need your help before the announced results. Thanks Link to poll: http://www.thebostonchannel.com/index.htmlUnion Link to more info: http://gbclc.com/ufcw-791-workers-shaw%2526%2523039%3Bs-methuen-distribution-center-strike%21

35. Thank you - family member is one of 310 workers |

It is really important to support these UFCW workers. They are not drivers, but rather warehouse workers.
The media coverage early on was minor (people at the Boston Globe told them the NYT said not to cover strike) but the press coverage has picked up by the end of the week.
The reasons for striking relate to the health insurance coverages - cutting out coverage for certain procedures, increasing deductibles, raising contributions. Also, the company wants to hire part-time workers with few or no benefits as fulltime workers leave.
The new CEO of the parent company is from Walmart - apparently wants to remake the company in Walmart's image. The company (Supervalu) is also laying off middle management and store workers all over the country - at Jewel Osco, at Shaws in NE - those remaining are being asked to do more/cover more with no increase in wages.
