Rep. Issa downplays threats compares it to anti-war protests

http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/89329-issa-downplays-threats-but-calls-for-hearing

<snip>

The ranking Republican on the House Government Reform and Oversight Committee is calling for hearings into the alleged threats of violence against lawmaker.

Rep. Darrell Issa (Calif.) says the hearings should put the reported acts of violence into context and make clear that they're nothing new.

Issa told CNN on Friday morning that lawmakers should "make the public more aware that there have been ongoing credible and not-so-credible threats for years to both parties."

"People have gone over the top. But they went over the top on the war," Issa said. "I remember even on the House floor, two of our members had wet, red-painted money thrown on them from the stands."

Angry outbursts surrounding the healthcare debate are "not an amount so much greater than we would have expected," he said.

"The vote for the Gulf War, even the post-Afghanistan conflict, had similar situations," he said.

7. The last leftist violence I recall over war was the bombing of Sterling Hall . . .
Certainly there have been threats, from both sides, over the years, but I don't remember anyone on the left targeting specific individuals for death. And had the Perriello gas line blown when the family was at home, many more deaths could have resulted from that than the single man killed in Madison so many years ago.
