Anyone else here who is looking for a job and keeps being approached to sell
life insurance? I'm trying to find a position in marketing/business development and/or corporate communications (proposal writing, newsletters, etc.), and I've gone to several networking events where I'm pounced upon (practically) by people recruiting for Primerica and other places. I went to another event where a very pushy woman from NY LIFE claimed she wanted to talk to me about my resume. She then proceeded to try to sell me life insurance.

1. Another scam:
going to an interview with an insurance company and then being told it would cost 500 bucks for them to train you. :grr:

9. Oh yeah; another lady ccalled me yesterday..also life insurance.
She said she got my resume from someone I met at a networking event. I called her back; funny...she emailed me and asked me to email her my resume. Funny, I thought..don't you have it already?

Not sending her a damn thing.

10. Yeah I got one like that too..................
except that it was "health" insurance. Although I can't say for sure that it was a scam, it sure felt like it to me, so I passed. They didn't require $500, but they did require a week's free work for "training" and $240 or so for a test. They said they would pay back the cash in 60 days, but that would have left me hanging if I had decided to quit before that. It wasn't worth it.

3. I keep getting emails from State Farm

They are farming job web sites like CareerBuilder and Dice and spamming job seekers.

4. The problem is in lead generation

Most people sell their family and friends and have no leads after 6 months.

90% of the people selling insurance don't make it past the first year.

5. I come across that stuff a lot and so do people I know.
It is like a rain of vultures swooping down to pick the bones dry.

Expect that to increase to the point of nausea. The American way of life, regardless of its condition, is said to be non-negotiable.

At least they aren't locking you up in a room, tying you up, and forcing your eyelids open for a presentation ... yet.

8. The NY Life lady proceeded to forward my resume to a temp agency.
Edited on Fri Mar-26-10 04:45 PM by SCRUBDASHRUB
I'd never heard of them. I Googled them and saw the name was associated with a scam (though one thread on a board I saw disputed it.). Regardless, I did not appreciate her sending it to a temp agency without my permission. I'm on unemployment and am avoiding temping unless and until my unemployment runs out (I'm trying for direct hire/full-time for now).

I emailed the NY Life lady and said we weren't interested in her services.
