2. The Republicans have known all along, the only way to get the

Insurance Companies to give up cherry picking etc and
agree to no rescinding of policy if one gets sick and
no pre-existing conditions etc. was to mandate that
all buy insurance.

As a business, they would collapse if they gave in on
No Pre-existing conditions and gave up ability to deny
coverage when you get sick unless they had huge numbers
of clients.

This was the trade off. Yes, even Richard Nixon had
a plan similar. The BoB Dole Plan as alternative
to the Clinton Plan had the Mandate.

It simply will not work without the Mandate. The GOP
have been most disingenuous when they say they want
to reducc costs and those few incremental steps.
They know darn well the Insurance Companies walk away
unless they get something big in return.
