Stupak is a co-sponser of HR 874 "Freedom to Travel to Cuba Act"

Stupack was endorsed by the following unions in 2008:

International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 324

In this youtube video of a Stupak town meeting held October 9, 2009 in Cheboygan, Michigan, Stupak says he'll vote for the HCR bill even if his amendment is defeated.

Stupak supports universal health care:

“It’s caused a lot of internal conflict. ‘Am I doing the right thing,’ you know?” he told The Hill days before the health care vote Sunday. “I believe everyone should have health care. In all my correspondence — I’ve been saying for years — it’s a right, not a privilege.”

"....He never signed up for federal health benefits, keeping a 1992 campaign promise that he would wait until universal health care was the law of the land. "

Stupak's primary challenger ,Connie Saltonstall, got 37% of the vote in her 2008 run for the 105th state house seat.

Mz. Saltonstall has expressed doubts she can defeat a Republican in the general election:

"Saltonstall, a former teacher and Charlevoix County commissioner who ran for the state House in 2008, said she realizes that if she wins, it could hurt the Democrats' chances of retaining the seat in what many consider a conservative district."

NOW President Terry O'Neill:

"I think he does not belong in Congress," said O'Neill. But, she said, "It would not be a success to have a conservative Republican replace Bart Stupak."

Michael Moore's assesment of Stupak's district:

He's a pretty quiet guy, a former Michigan State Police trooper who boldly decided to run some 18 years ago as a Democrat in a rural part of Michigan that votes almost exclusively for Republicans (yes, I know -- what am I doing here? I'll save that story for a future letter).

"...David Haynes, a political science professor at Northern Michigan University. Still, he said, Saltonstall faces long odds.

"Since Roe v. Wade, there has not been a pro-choice congressman elected in this district," Haynes said.

"This district is pro-life, pro-gun and pro-working families," he said. "Democrats know that they would be at great risk if Bart wasn't on the ticket because then Republicans would have a good shot here."
